Yes, i have two stainless lifelines. I only have to lift it an inch over the lifelines though. But, with using the winch i could easily lift it a meter above them if i had to.

Seems complicate... why not just spin halyard it straight onto the deck?

Because if you just use a halyard to lift it on it's own, you drag the dingy up over the sides, running the risk of damaging your paint work on your boat and damaging the dingy.

Fair enough - doing it alone then?

I've always done it with the halyard literally thousands of times. My dinghy never stays in the water so it comes up and down that way sometimes several times a day.

and if there are two of you then it's not a problem, the dinghy never touches the sides. One holds the dinghy off. By leaning on the halyard one person can hold a very heavy dinghy off the side even in a breeze with movement.

A cruising boat shouldn't have such delicate paintwork, that'll only lead to tears

Well, it probably depends on the dingy size then. which would be reasonable.

Mine is 45kg (2400 lenght) without the motor and without anything in it, including water. It's damn difficult to keep it pushed off the sides and I'd suggest impossible in a slop. And that's a small plastic dingy. With the set up I've got now, I can lower and raise it, on my own, without it touching the sides.
