Best knot to tie to a loop under pressure

What is a good knot to tie to a rope loop, under pressure.
Many times, when I am trying to tighten something, I form a loop, come with the end of the rope through the loop and pull tight. But I don't know how to tie it off at that point. And I usually do all sorts of weird knots to try to secure it.
Do let me know if the description above makes no sense and I will try to illustrate it

Not sure if I understand, but if you are talking about binding something tightly, you could look at a Constrictor Knot.

Let's go with an old classic: round turn and two half hitches...

For entertainment value, Elcid, here's an old thread of mine where we discussed everyone's Top 5 Knots:

+1 if your loop is under strain from either end. I use it for tying a jib sheet to a staysal with one long line.

Wouldn’t the tautline hitch work here?

I use a bowline for almost everything as it is easy to undo even after it has been under extreme pressure.

True enough, but the OP is looking for a knot to tie in a line that is already under tension. If you know a way to tie a bowline in a line that is already under tension, please let the rest of the world know about it...

I may be the only one who does this, but I usual finish off my trucker's hitches with a tautline hitch.

I put an alpine butterfly loop in the standing end, take the running end around or through the fastening point, then through the butterfly loop and pull it taught as in a trucker's hitch, then instead of tying it off with a half-hitch, I use a tautline hitch.

This gives me the leverage of the trucker's hitch while maintaining the adjustability of the tautline.

I'll wrap a couple of half-hitches around the whole thing, when done, to prevent slipping.

Re: Best knot to tie to a loop under pressure

I always use a trucker's hitch when tying something down on deck or anywhere you need to hold something tight. It gives a two to one advantage and is easy to back up with a couple half-hitches behind the loop. If there is a jerking load, back up the half-hitches with an overhand knot, though this is not usually necessary.
