New to Cruising Forum but enjoying browsing through the various topics.

Crossed the Atlantic from UK to Antigua last year on a new 49ft Dufour 485 Grand' Large.

As it was my first Ocean Crossing as skipper, I decided to prepare a Safety Manual. So, I enlisted the help of each of the crew members (largely friends) and between us we created a bespoke safety manual covering everything from dailly safety checks, heavy weather procedures, medical emergencies etc.

Although not a totally comprehensive manual, the real benefit came from using it as a team building device (everyone participated) and as a way of rehearsing above and below deck routines before we set off.

Must have been quite and experience, and its wonderful you are offering to share your knowledge. Need more people like you out there. We have a website for the beginning sailors, but we've have added a number of articles from experienced sailors and circumnavigators in our "Teachable Moments" section. Have any "lessons-learned-the-hard-way" you would care to share?

No plans to make it twice a year! Planning to do a season part chartering, pary family and friends and part racing in Caribbean, then back across the pond, eventually ending up on west coast of Scotland and the Scottish islands for the summer. Where are u?

tnx for posting Me and my three friends are preparing a preparation for sail across the Atlantic from the east. I just joined today on a forum to google a bit
We all have experience in the Med..especially in the Adriatic but first time for all of us across the ocean.

Folks, just an aside here.

It's not a good idea to post your email address in clickable form anywhere on the Internet. Unscrupulous low-life sorts use "bots" to crawl the various forum websites in order to harvest email addresses, which then end up on lists for sale to spammers.

If you want to give out your email address, modify it to something like...

JoeDoe_at_hotmail _dot_com

That will at least keep the bots at bay.

p.s. Nigel, very generous of you to share your Safety manual! If it's in Microsoft Word format, you could upload it as an attachment to a post, if that's something you'd be comfortable with.

I think a online sailing text about crossing the Atlantic would be great. We have many long distance sailors here- what about a section of the CF that would be devoted to various trade routes and what is needed to do them- updated by those who have recently done the route and or have the credentials to do so.
I don't know how we would do the last part, but it would be great to get good solid info on different sea routes for those of us that are just stretching our ocean wings...
