Anchoring advice

Has anyone ever used a Kellet orc Senrinel in a tight anchorage? Was it effective?

I’d like to hear only from people who have actual experience using a Kellet

It only helps you if you shorten the scope... because a squall will just lift the kellet and this is when it’s most important to limit swing.

The consensus is that it’s better to put the weight of the kellet into the anchor itself and shorten scope. In 20’ of water or more, we are happy with 3:1 scope using an oversized anchor.

I tried using a 33lb anchor as a kellet and did not see any effect. I’m sure it did something but not enough to notice.

What does help very well in tight situations is a Bahamian moor, but with such a short swing, others might hit you...

Re: Anchoring advice

+1 to Jedi's advice above.

Traditionally, a kellet was used to keep the anchor chain on the bottom, enhancing the anchor's holding.

This can all be simplified by just upping the weight of your primary anchor and/or increasing the ratio of chain:rode in your setup.

How are you settling in on your new boat, Michael? Where have you been? Got any pictures for us?

Fair winds,

Re: Anchoring advice

Yes, we have used one, but not to improve holding. We were in a spot that had 350 degrees of clear space but one coral bommie within our scope. The prevailing winds set us in the opposite direction, but at night the diurnal breeze would swing our rudder close to the bommie. There was nowhere else to anchor. We put a 30Kg fisherman anchor onto a large shackle and let it down on a line till it touched bottom. It was effective to "shorten" scope by about 8m without actually reducing scope. It also served as added catenary of maybe 10 m of chain (have not calculated, just the feel of it)

Re: Anchoring advice

+1 Kellets are only effective in light winds. Will help keep your boat from meandering in light air when the wind dies, especially if you use rope rode. Other than that, it complicates your anchor deployment and retrieval, and in my experience it has little value.
Better to carry a heavier anchor and use more chain if you want better holding.

Re: Anchoring advice

A Kellet came with my boat and just for fun tried it out. As sailFastTri wrote, in light wind it helps a little keeping the chain from wandering too much. Other than this, I keep as a man-over-board device for annoying guests.

Re: Anchoring advice

I also tried it once, a 15 kg one, boy what a hassle to launch and even more so to retrieve: put the weight in the anchor, problem solved

Re: Anchoring advice

Or treble your anchor chain with a couple of shackles??

Re: Anchoring advice

So I bought a 34# plow anchor for my 30’ boat and I’ll keep my little 15# danforth and maybe experiment with using it as a kedge.

I’ve got 47 fathoms 5/8” theee strand nylon and three fathoms and 3 fathoms 1/2” chain with a swivel.

Re: Anchoring advice

Michael, see how you get on with the plow anchor. Some folk like them others including me couldn't, so replaced it. However, mine was a pretty awful copy rather than genuine CQR.

The 15lb danforth is a good size, if you are in sand you might try that as the main. They are popular second anchors and we carry a 7kg one. Did quite well in this very tough test:

Re: Anchoring advice

A plow anchor holds better then anything else here although danforth is a close second.

I don't think you should have said that WW3 normally breaks out about now when someone makes bold anchor statements.

I can see a few members reaching for their helmets and flak jackets
