A cockpit enclosure is a very good idea.

We found the trip a lot of fun but we didn't try to push too fast. Five hours a day kept it from being too much of a grind and allowed time to explore local watering holes (and unexpectedly good restaurants) when we were near a town. We touched bottom a couple of times but immediately backed off.

Snoopy joined during Christmas and was a watchful navigator the the rest of the trip. Maybe that's why we didn't run aground much.

Last year there was a lot of ice in the canal and the upper bay in january I could not get my boat out of the river before christmas due to ice Most years its ok but you are taking a chance You are at summit north of course

My wife and I traveled down the Chesapeake in December 2010 and from the Carolinas down to Florida in January. If I was to do it over again I would surely invest in a full enclosure. I froze on the sounds with the wind whipping over the rail (and I have a hard dodger on my 42' Hunter) which resulted in a week's stay in a Florida hospital to recuperate from the walking pneumonia. Despite that, the ICW is not as bad as one would think if you use the tides to pass over the shallow areas (check the coastal pilots and/or Active Captain for their location). We stayed in marinas on the way down for the electrical connections that powered our reverse cycle ac/heater.

If you don't get down to the Carolinas by the beginning of December, you might have trouble in the form of frozen lines for your water storage, etc.

In Georgia, use caution where the passage is skinny in a rocky/shale area that can damage your vessel; otherwise the only problem you'll have is when you touch bottom (and you will touch in a few places given your draft) and hit mud ... that's where an unlimited BoatUS or Seatow policy will come in handy if you can't get off by yourself.

When in doubt, go slow. You can usually avoid trouble that way.

Hey welcome aboard.. I've got a pommy joke for you.

A pom and an aussie in a yacht club bathroom, both stand at the urinal at the same time. After doing thier business the pommy washes his hands but the aussie walks straight out.

The pommy approaches the aussie outside the loo and says "Sir, I dont know where you come from, but where i come from they teach us to wash our hands after we urinate"

The aussie responds with " mate, i dont know where you come from either, but where i come from they teach us not to pee on our fingers"

Most of the rivers in the upper bay were frozen in December 2010. Let's hope this winter is not as cold

OFF TOPIC, but I don't care. I'm watching a Bruce Brown movie and remembering when I surfed. One day I was out with a real blow hard. He owned the local Surf Shop but never surfed. He talked trash about me all day. (I was the youngest guy there at 14). I have to say that he had never seen me surf. I caught a wave, taller than me, and got tucked deep in the curl, breaking over my shoulder. I look up and there he is with his jaw some place below his knees. For the ten seconds the surf was breaking on my shoulder I was GOD! And he was the ass I thought he was. Now 50 years later I still cherish that ten seconds.
