1st boat..Plywood hull 28' trawler type fishing boat. Toredo worms ate it. It had an old gas engine with an updraft carb. Don't miss a thing.
3rd boat...46' Hunter. Yup I got the one everyone warns you about when buying a Hunter. The only thing I miss was the marina slip I parked it in.
6th boat...lagoon 37' catamaran. Love everything about it (after modifications). Ride, space, ability to cruise, simple and easy to repair. Well thought out design, nothing hard to get to. Still own it, still cruise in it.

Never forgot anything to take but I like living simply. Crew always wished I had more kitchen gadgets (small blender, spatula, and the like).

Scares...You can figure out my stories. Lucky my boat has been smart enough to just teach me a simple lesson rather than driving the point home.
1) I reef EVERY night, now, no matter what the weather forecast.
2) Research and find the BEST anchor. Do your own research! Get the best, as your boat and you rest on it.
3) Wait until the sun is high enough when entering a pass into the atolls.
4) Don't leave your BBQ on the rail when on passage.
5) Replace the dinghy halyard when you see it fraying.
6) Dinghies are spiteful beasts that are always attempting to escape or to pitch you into the water.

An Old Town Tripper canoe. Tough to get a galley into these BUT could carry a great deal of beer downriver.

My very first boat I bought was a 12 ft Hobie mono-cat #109 or the 9th one sold, I was working my first job after school in 1970 when I bought it in Atlanta Ga and sailed on lakes and off shore in the Atlantic untill I couldn't see the water towers when I stood up. It was a scream and it had everything a good sailor needed ,hull, sails, mast, rudder, popup daggerboard, a place for drinks and snacks, a small oil lantern for lights. My Hobie cat buddies back then I camped beside were lawyers, Dr's and I was the engineer that knew how to fix stuff that went wrong. AH the good old days hauling my Hobie-cat on my ford Pinto. I'm sure in 40 years some of the windsuffers will be crusers too.

My first boat was also an Old Town Tripper Canoe. After many expeditions in that, I purchased my first cruising sailboat: A Westerly Centaur 26.

What I liked most about it is that it got me to the Bahamas several times and was a very affordable boat to own.

The best thing I did was to do my first 1-month cruise solo. Knowing I could be self-sufficient meant there was never any pressure on crew and no worries if they couldn't make it.

A 13" Chrysler Pirateer. It turned out to be a wonderful platform for translating my reading into usable sailing skills. After some years, a Cal 20, then the current yatchet.

Hobie 14....followed soon be a 16...raced for 6 years...flying the hull at real speed is still my best sailing memory

Idle Along 12ft 6in LOA 6ft beam...hence its name. Slept on air beds on the slat floor looking at the stars. Ate sandwiches often soggy. Taught me to go anywhere without an engine.

First boat, Catalina 22 fin keel. What I miss most about it is that it was so easy to cast of the dock and sail away. In 15 minutes after arrival I could be underway. Destination, leeward Oahu.

Ranger 23 , what I miss most? She could spin on a dime , sailed in and out of port or anchorage.

8' MiniMax hydroplane with a 1947 Mercury KE7 engine.
It had a wheel and a hand held deadman throttle.
The engine had no cover at all, and I modified it to run on a pressure gas tank instead of the original gravity fed one.

I carried a spark plug wrench with me at all times because they would foul often.
To clean them when the engine died, I'd slosh them off in the salt water and blow on them. They dried quickly because they were almost too hot to hold onto, but I never dropped one overboard!

My favorite pastime was jumping Washington State Ferry wakes in Elliot Bay in Seattle.

The sides of the little boat were so rotten, you could stick an icepick through them.
They were held together with multiple layers of paint.

olympian 34, was able to sail anywhere in world i wanted to go --bullet-proof huill...just needed an interior...i LOVE my formosa --this i s around 10 boats later in my life and i HAVE begun to get places i didn't go before. and i dont have to run away from home anymore to get to where i wanna go.
