What Do Women Want?
Hello,
My name is Tanya. My partner Anthony and I have recently bought a Duncanson 34, her name is Crossroads, to fulfil a lifelong dream to set ourselves free and sail to distant shores. We are just starting out so each weekend we sail in Brisbane's Moreton Bay developing our skills.
Our plan is to spend the next 3-5 years getting our sea legs in a variety of cruising waters and then set off for an extended period of time into the Pacific.
Unless we have a miraculous windfall we will both still need to either be earning a passive income (we do have a small investment property leased). I am a massage therapist and was wondering if my skills could be utilised by other cruisers? I'm also interested to know what women cruisers want? What do women want to enhance or enrich your cruising experience?
Looking forward to meeting you all on this forum and on the seas.
Regards, Tanya

Hi Tanya ane welcome to CF. Congratulations on being one massive step closer to pursuing your dream. I can't speak for women in general, but I do know that for my wife having enough fresh water for a decent shower is extremely important.

Re: What Do Women Want?
Welcome and all the best on your plans! In one of the marinas I was in, I saw a sign for haircuts that one of the boats offered. Not sure how successful they were at that or if this could be a way that you could offer massage services. I get massage for a troubling back and it's a great help, but unfortunately it's one of the first things I drop when money or time is tight.

Hi Tanya and welcome.
You pose an interesting question.....What do women want ?
I gave a lot of thought to the question and then came up with a brilliant idea...I'll ask my wife!
Her answer was plain and quite simple.....
"There isn't enough band width to post everything a woman wants, so get off the computer and go cut some grass!"
Enough said.

Re: What Do Women Want?
each woman wants something different.
most of all, i htink most women out here in this lifestyle want respect--it is not given, only earned. it takes time. what is said is not what is.
actions are the measure of the individual. i have met more braggodocious folks out here than even in professional sports car racing.
depending on what it is being asked--this is a very large and vague question!!!!!
in my dreams i could use a formosa 51, but i HAVE a 41.
i would LIKE repair folks to actually repair. ha h aha ha ha ha ha
i will be most happy when this boat is finished with her repairs so i can sail again as much as i want to and wherever i wish.
but, then . i have not much respect for shoes--so i am not normal female..h aha ha h aha
and i HATE shopping. gag. worst thing in life.
now, rowing. kayaking..zooming around in an overpowered r i b.
and the sight of a hunky or not man of my age group who has eyes for a woman in same age group with a sailing habit....
oh yeah. welcome. have fun

Re: What Do Women Want?
Hi, in my experience the main trouble is that probably this is going to be a good service you might offer, but because most of us are in the same condition, this is not helping you to raise some significant founds.
If you intend to do it extensively, you'd rather be in or close to thoose places and marina for the rich ones where you might collect some money...but also be forced to spend a lot more!
You're more likely to be offering your knowledge to people around and get back their competence for ex in motor manteinance, trip advising, sails repairing that is surely worth dollars!!!
Anyway if you'll be sailing in Italy, you have a potential customer!!!!

Welcome to the forum. I guess it depends on how much you charge. All the cruisers I know are on a tight budget, like yourselves. But for the right price, I'm sure you would get a few takers.

Hi Tanya,
In St Martin this year there was a good massage therapist. She charged $15 for half hour, $30 for full hour.
Only other viable one is hair cuts. But remember most men can get theirs done for $15 in the cruising world in town, so thats gunna be your fee at the max.
But its easy to learn and tools negligible.
As for whatever women do when they go into a salon that takes hours and costs a fortune, i don't think cruisers often afford it, not a boat bound hairdresser have the equipment.
Can I add: Some women decide cruising means going feral. Its something not necessary even on the tightest budget. Helping women look and feel good on their budget could be a worthwhile service.

Re: What Do Women Want?
Relative to haircutting, there's a gal who is very good at it charging $25 for a haircut in Pittwarer, but it's not enough to fund cruising, it's only a supplement.
What do women want? Respect, like zeehag said, and it will be given you. Men other than your partner will feel envious of him. Develop your skills, navigation, piloting, help with the repairs, and don't be surprised if some of the long, polished fingernail crowd tells you shouldn't be aloft sewing on a spreader boot, as happened to another CF member while in the big marina at Bundy.
On the physical level, you have to work out how to keep clean enough given your tankage, and eat well enough for your standards. When you think in terms of needs rather than wants, you're on the right track.

What women want, not to be yelled while tying to anchor, grab a mooring, etc, wine, ice cream.

1. By other cruisers? yes, look at the bigger boats, but do not expect normal wages.
2. As mentioned above, adequate fresh water is high on the list. Me, I want the water on the outside of the boat, all systems working, and she should look shipshape, as your "Crossroads" does, plus it should be what I think is fun, so the more competent a sailor you become, the more fun it is--if you're so inclined.
3. Very individual. For me, I have had a lot to learn about problem solving. Some women take hobbies with them, watercolours, or musical instruments. If you're out in the South Pacific Islands, and you bring your guitar ashore, you'll have a wonderful experience, as long as the acoustical guitar is not too nice to take ashore. Even other cruisers may abuse musical instruments at beach gatherings; sad, but true. Source of satisfaction, learning a few words of the local lingo, pleases them so much!
