We Share a Certain Kind of Crazy Enthusiasm

After forty years of talking about it, I'm finally doing it.
I’ve bought the boat.
I have a girlfriend crazy enough to come with me.
I’m selling the house and all my stuff.
At the end of the hurricane season, we move onto the boat for a five to fifty year sabbatical.

I’ve been lurking for over a year and am amazed at the knowledge and enthusiasm demonstrated by you people. I found this forum by searching on “3GM30” and I’m sure you’ve saved me many thousands of dollars already.

I’m happy to be aboard and hope I can contribute in my own way.

Go for it! Well, it sounds like you already are but still had to say it Godspeed to your dreams, house closings and cutting of the dock lines.
Cheers,
Erika

Congrats on selling the house (less than a year so there's hope for the rest of us) and buying the boat. The Fortuna's a nice cat and 40' a sweet size.

Can we assume your heading South as opposed to the Northwest Passage?

Thanks Capt.,

Selling the house wasn't an issue, it was getting the kids squared away and getting my mind wrapped around the reality of doing it as opposed to the dreaming of doing it. The expression "Be careful of what you wish for." comes to mind.

As for the Northwest Passage, with all due respect to Stan Rogers, I think we'll stick to the southern latitudes. To quote another great Canadian singer/songwriter, Neil Young, when asked why he had a ranch in California he said, "I've done my cold time."

I had a harder time convincing the kids I wasn't "muy loco" than convincing the now ex-wife that cruising was the way I wanted to go. She had a harder time reducing a 4/3 house and three cars to a sailboat. We ended up compromising by getting a couple large storage lockers - just in case.

I grew up in New Hampshire and decided the only snow I wanted to see was on TV. So far, it's been a great, challenging, confounding ride.

I tell friends the last two and skip the first one.

Congratulations on the sale of the house and the start of your new life (and a great time to sell to the extent that housing values in our neck of the woods are due for a fair size drop in the next couple of years). I'm sure you'll find great advice here on everything from maintenance (as you already know) to anchorages. And we, of course, look forward to hearing of your experiences and adventures.
