Textbooks?

just wondering if any one can recomend a book that teaches what you need to know about sailing. I'm talking about how to navigate and read maps properly with new technology as well as the old method's, the different types of sail boats and there rigging, terminology, stuff like that.
thanks

Re: textbooks?

If you're looking for a reference work, try Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship. I believe it's now in its 65th edition.

Re: textbooks?

The USCG Auxiliary's basic and advanced coastal navigation course is a great way to learn. You can take a look at the textbooks on this site..

Re: Textbooks?

Chapman's is huge but it seems to me to be mostly for motor boaters. The Annapolis book is very good for a beginner. Get Beth Leonard's "The Voyager's Handbook" and Nigel Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual." These will give you 90%+ of what you can learn from books. For the rest, go sailing any way you can. Try anything from Sabot Dinks to Lasers to Hobie cats to crewing on bigger boats. Hang around your local marina and volunteer to crew. Somebody will take you sailing and you'll learn a lot like what it takes to make you seasick and what to do about it, which way winches turn, when to duck when the boat tacks or jibes, etc., etc. Remember there are no dumb questions! (Annoying maybe but not dumb.)

Both "Chapman's..." and "Annapolis..." are large encyclopedic works. Great references, but if you want texts that are focused on more narrow, and/or introductory, subject areas then you might try existing texts specifically for sailing instruction. Both ASA and US Sailing publish texts for each of their classes.

Keep in mind though, that reading books won't teach you to sail.
