Subs to sails
Hi everyone, my name is Greg. My wife, son and I live in Groton Connecticut U.S.A.
I've been in the U.S. Navy's submarine for for 17 years. I will retire in 3 years and don't want to stop being a sailor. So I'll be leaving submarines and moving to sails.
Sailing has been a part of my life since I was 8 and I love it. I try to get out on my S2 8.0 as much as possible!

Re: Subs to sails
Welcome to CF Greg. And thank you for your service. Not everyone can take 17 years on subs. Enjoy your retirement and be extra safe those last 3 years.

Re: Subs to sails
Welcome to CF, and I hope that the change from looking up at the surface to looking down goes well for you. Don't think I could have done the service that you have, so thanks for being there!

Re: Subs to sails
Welcome to the CF Greg, so the plan is to go from a sinker that floats, to a floater that hopefully doesn't sink lol.
Congratulations on closing on 20, I left after 5 (ex wife's idea, regret it now) 17 would have put us in BESS and or Aschool about the same time, I wonder if we've met...

Re: Subs to sails
Welcome aboard Greg! S2 8.0, great little boat! I have a sub question for you, can subs see a little sailboat up ahead before they surface?

Re: Subs to sails
Welcome!
I flew subs too, USS Miami and USS Annapolis.
Can subs see a sailboat ahead before surfacing?
No. The view isn't very good out the front window
If the engine is running, we can hear you, and avoid you.
If you are just sailing, and it's a little rough out there, probably not. Worth thinking about if you are in a sub transit lane...
We typically don't surface/dive very close to shore...
Spent more than a couple of years checking out sailboats in the Caribbean...didn't take long to realize I was on the wrong side of that periscope!

Re: Subs to sails
I figured our depth finders would give us away at least, assuming your listening of course

As I remember it, would be reported as "contact Sierra ( insert number here) bearing (insert bearing here) evaluated as fathometer, detection risk evaluated as minimal."
