south carolina georgia coast

Hello
My wife and I are considering a move to the south east coast, we want to have access to cruising waters. We don't intend to be liveaboards, we do however want to be able to cruise for several days to a week at a time. Does anyone have any thoughts on locations. We are not wealthy, so purchasing a waterfront plantation in charlston is not what we are looking for.

harumph...south of the chesapeake...the sounds of the n.carolina coast are the only decent cruising grounds till you hit the Bahamas or the West Coast of FL.
All you can do in GA and SC is sail out a bit then turn around and come back in. Fine sailing...but not cruising. Check out areas around the Neuse River in NC as this is where the majority of NC sailors keep their boats.

Have to agree with camaraderie, N. Carolina has some good sailing/cruising. I don't think you'll like S Carolina, or Georgia. Not much and the spits are long toturous things just waiting to have you run aground on them. N.C. has some very reasonable locations to store your boat and you can still find good values as far as housing.

We stayed in New Bern for about a year!! Sunspot Baby still lives in New Bern... He is a good source.

Do consider Georgia. We do sail right out and back, but what fun. You are one day sail to fun places like Savannah or St. Augustine and Jax's St. John River. You are four days to the Bahamas. A couple good marinas in Brunswick and St. Simons area. Come on down.

Welcome aboard! It appears you are getting some opinions already. I don't know about that area but did visit New Bern for a day once and I have a friend near Oriental. Looked like great places to sail. Housing prices are dropping. It might be a good time to relocate.

The Atlantic coast of Georgia is orientated north to south. For a tropical cyclone to cross the Georgia coast and move directly inland, it must be moving due west in the Atlantic - an unusual path. Starting around Hilton Head Island, South Carolina - the Atlantic coast extends east into the ocean. The northeastern portion of the South Carolina coast is furthest east, and somewhat at a higher risk than the counties to the south.
