Scammed on here

My husband bought a Lewmar winch through this site. $1000 paid to Quintarius Gibbs. User name gibbsn. Of course we’ve contacted our bank and used the phone number to call but “he moved out and don’t call here anymore”. So I called 10 more times I am including a screenshot of his info. Please if anyone can help w info on this scammer we would appreciate it. Or if you have a Lewmar winch 48 we need one as a bearing fell in water. Had to buy a new one. I told hubs not to. Seemed scammy to me

Re: Scammed on here

Sorry about the loss. Hopefully your bank can help.

Scams like this are on the rise. Some red flags for others that might see this:
"Im not sure of you got to buy as I have one for sale" - clear basic grammar errors. This person is likely in an underdeveloped country, Nigeria, India, SE Asia, or something.
Join Date Dec 2022. He just joined and his first activity is to sell something. Buying from someone who has been around a while and has a reputation is much safer.
Cashapp/Zelle/USPS Money order - None of these have buyer protection or a way to dispute a money transfer. NEVER use any of these to send money to someone you don't know. If a seller will not accept paypal, don't complete the transaction. When using paypal, be sure to say that it is for goods or services, and pay that extra fee. That is what gives you buyer protection.

Re: Scammed on here

Hello erinsbee,

Have you contacted Lewmar in order to replace the missing bearing? If you can get them to tell you the dimensions of the bearing, there are bearing supply shops you can order one from. Lewmar, themselves might even tell you who their supplier is.

Hope this helps in the meantime.

You were right to be suspicious of such a scam. If you paid by debit card, you may be able to get your money back. Be sure to report the fraud to the police, too, if they're interested.

Ann

Re: Scammed on here

Sorry to hear about you being scammed. I hope you manage to track him down and also sorry I can't help in that regard (although I will have a search later across the 'net' for any footprint he might have left).

As gibbsn never advertised a winch in the classifieds section of CF, I assume he contacted you via a PM.

Gibbsn's CF was deleted a day or back after being reported for sending scam type unsolicited PMs. Without going into details, a check showed him up as a bad actor and his account was removed.

The point of this post to ask everyone who receives unsolicited PMs (especially from new zero post 'members') to report them immediately. Use the report icon which is located at the top RHS of every PM. It really is the most effective way for the moderation team to keep CF free of this scum.

See also the sticky in the classifieds - Avoid Scams.

Our classifieds are free and anyone registered here is welcome to post an ad.
Be aware that there are unscrupulous folks out there. Avoid any interaction that seems odd to you or ‘feels’ wrong. Inquiries from unknown buyers, buyers ‘agents’ and other non-traditional approaches should be treated with extreme caution.

Beware of unsolicited contacts offering to put you in touch with someone else who is buying or selling via e-mail or text.

Do not post your e-mail address or phone number in a classifieds ad.

Hints that you may be dealing with a Scammer:
  • Seller or Buyer approaches you via a direct email or PM and then steers you to an off-site communication method (text or email).
  • No posts or very few forum posts.
  • Recent forum membership
  • Insists on conducting negotiations via email or text rather than PM
  • Requires payment via Bank Transfer, BitCoin/CryptoCurrency, WesternUnion or other unsecured method.
  • Buyer or Seller suggests Paypal "Friends and Family" payment. Paypal is a good way to arrange payment but an invoice for goods and services should be used rather than "Friends and Family". "Friends and Family" avoids fees BUT there is no recourse if the transaction runs aground. Friends and Family is for gifts only. There is no protection for Friends and Family transactions, so never ever use it to buy something.
  • Declines to allow viewing the item before proceeding with the transaction.

Please report any suspicious PM to the site team via the report icon on the message.

I'd suggest diving for the bearing. It might not be hard to find as you think, since you know where it hit the water.

Re: Scammed on here

I have to check, but I think I have one of these that I may be selling if yiu are willing to wait about 2 weeks. I don't know if you are in a rush.

I know it doesn't help wkth the scammer, but I'm most likely replacing mine with an electric one.

Re: Scammed on here

Just an FYI: I use Paypal for potential iffy purchases etc. Much easier to deal with than rejecting a payment on your CC..... At least once you've been with PP a while.
Request the refund as "item not received" or "item not as described" and they will refund and will do the work.

I’d be very interested. Please let us know if and when that is for sale. Thank you

OK. Great. It is most likely going to be for sale. I just need to double check if it is the right number. The right size for you. I know it’s a Lewmar and it’s big. Hoping it’s not a 46. I could swear it’s a 48.

I most likely am switching to electric, so I will put your user name in my notes and reach out to you as soon as I get with the Riggers about that part of the project.

Some of the 1980s-era Lewmar 48 bearings are no longer available from any source.

As an aside, some of the 1990s-era Harkin 48 self-tailing parts are no longer available either, requiring an expensive retrofit of the entire self-tailing mechanism should anything break (Ask me how I know).

I feel the OP's pain and second thinwater's advice to dive for the bearing if possible. If in an area where diving is prohibited or unsafe, you could go magnet fishing.

Yeah. We now know. I told him to get a magnet. It’s been five weeks. I wonder if that is too long

Sorry about the scam. A cautionary message for the rest of us to be reminded about. I am a recovery diver in black water (zero visibility) and can tell you the object has not likely moved unless you're in a high surge area. Depending on how soft the bottom is though, it can sink down a bit. Dragging a magnet around could just displace it so go up and down with the magnet. If you can't find it and know of a local diver, put a buoy with a weighted line on the spot where it went in. The diver can follow the line down and do a "sweep" around the weight by feel. They just have to be slow and methodical with a small object. The line can help hold their position in low viz. If it's sandy and clear water, then it should be seen clearly right where you left it

Re: Scammed on here

I unfortunately have also been scammed by this person on a different forum. I received the exact same message even mentioned the cancer. There were many back and forth messages which were all in plain English after the initial one. I found your post on this forum with a quick Google search of Quintarius Gibbs scam. My transaction took place on PayPal but unfortunately he insisted that it be through friends and family. I have a different name and email which I will include for you in a separate message. Please keep me posted as I will do the same for you. I hope that you are able to recover your money.
Nateburries36@gmail.com was the email provided for PayPal transaction the name on the account was Nathaniel Burries. Also the username Quintarius Gibbs was using one the other forum was Desertmafia21. I hope that can be of some assistance to you. I loathe a thief
