Hi Cruisers
My name is Jim and I'm new to the Forum. I live aboard my yacht Sayshell, a 30' steel Roberts bilge keeler and have survived a summer in the mangroves up the South Arm of the Daintree R. I'm loving the Coral Coast and hope to get to the top of Cape York(and back?) before the start of summer. Have retrofitted a kero/ gimballed stove that's turned the cabin into a warm, dry living quarters( had to send to England for that) so wet, damp evenings are not a problem. Mozzies are bad and the midges are worse but the crocodiles leave me alone. I'll keep you all posted when the tides allow me across the Bar as to sailing North. The Trades will make that easy- don't know about sailing South...

HI, Jim,

I said welcome aboard CF on your other thread with the pic of your boat. The mods have merged the two threads.

What we have done to work our way south from Lizard is to pick for traveling days, light SE condx, which turn NE in the arvo. So, one leaves on a heading as close to the wind as one can, while it is light. Then she shift comes, and then you head inshore on a heading to find your evening anchorage. This is not an onerous way to sail.

Then, eventually, the wind will be predicted to turn northerly. Hop on that puppy, and beat feet as fast as you can towards the SE. When it runs out (as it will), seek shelter with good provisioning. Wait for the Hi or ride to weaken. Repeat.

It does mean you will cancel social engagements, but your priority needs to be to make SE ing, where the coast is very easterly, in places. It's doable, but you really can't lose 8-12 hrs. of favourable winds.

You'll see.

That's so wonderfully helpful.
I thought I'd go North( from the Daintree) for a month or two then head South around Sept/Oct. (Northerlies?)
I will head for Brisbane eventually but not this year. I'm too busy really enjoying far Nth Qld. and getting the boat better set up- a work in progress-
I know. I'm not alone.
At the moment, I'm fitting a new Lowrance- with AIS. Just have to figure out how it can "talk" to the plotter.

Has anyone else heard the scuttlebutt of a demasting/ engine failure from Singapore in the Arafura Sea?
An elderly couple 5 yrs around Indonesia?
