Saying Hello!

Greetings from the Chesapeake Bay!

I'm currently a deckhand aboard the Sultana, a replica 18th century schooner. I fell into the tall ship world (and sailing) three years ago as a volunteer at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York. Previously, I had never sailed before nor even worked on boats - up until the age of 25 I was very much rooted on land and in school studying fine art. As a volunteer on the Pioneer I discovered something I had been looking for almost my whole life - a way to make my living on the water.

I'll be heading to Delaware next month for a stint of winter maintenance and then hopefully be crewing boats out of Baltimore or similar metro area. I still aspire to be a working artist and launch a secondary career as an illustrator. Working on the water provides me with alot of material and inspiration for my work. If you're interested, you can see some of my drawings on my instragram (evonhasseln).

Looking forward to getting more involved on the forums here and meeting you all!

Re: Saying Hello!

Welcome aboard CF, Evon, and good luck with the projects. We have some hidden artists lurking here, maybe they'll introduce themselves in due course. Jim and I are dinosaur cruisers, been doing it almost that long.

Saying Hello!

Evon, welcome to the forum and to the world of sailing. I enjoyed seeing you work on instagram, particularly your inktober series. As Ann said there are several artists who are sailors participating on the forum. I moved aboard with my wife, dog and cat on to our 42’ Tayana and brought a lot of materials for my painting. I found storage difficult for multiple canvases, brushes, solvents, drawing papers, easels, etc. I found places for it all but it was inconvenient to get it out to use it and put it away to get underway. I was spoiled by having my own studio. After a year aboard I took most of the art materials off the boat and put them in storage. We cruised for 3 years and are now back to splitting our time between the boat and House. I’m just about to get the paints out again. You can see my work at michaelwitenstein.com. Here are a couple...
