Salt Deficient Mermaid Awash in Kansas !

Hello everyone!

I heard about this site yesterday and was up til the wee hours scanning the different forums and delighting in the witty and humorous interactions.

I inherited a love of the water, particularly warm waters, from my sailor dad. In my teenage years, I spent several summers living aboard with him on our 28' Westerly, which we restored ourselves together. Giligan became my handle as we sailed different lakes and intercoastal areas throughout the country.

I carried that easy, free-spirited nature with me and have found myself lots of places (here in the states) and doing lots of different things. Last summer, for instance, I spent 3 1/2 months backpacking the rocky mountains of Idaho and Wyoming all alone but for my best friend Jack, the mountain dog! Ashame that it only lacked a coast.

Now, landlocked in Kansas I sink back to those memories of the spray off the bow on a windy day or the sound of gentle luffing on a not so windy day and am hoping that some sailor friends and good conversation might ease my discontentment. I half expect myself, in the coming months, to be posting to the crew available forum and running for warmer ground or not ground

Glad to be here

Hi mer-madenUSA!

Aye! Once the salt gets into the blood, it never comes out. Welcome to the forum. This is a great place to write, read, share and learn. Hope you get back to sailing and the sea sooner rather than later.

All the best and Happy Sailing!!!

Sorry, I don't believe it. According to the BBC, the US Government says mermaids don't exist.

Well, if I was a Mermaid seeking to avoid a search by the US Gubberment then I reckon Kansas would be a good place to hideout.

Welcome to Mer_Maden(USA)

Thanks! Your home is quite lovely but I hardly expected the coolaid red hair from a "senior sailor"

G'Day Mer...

Dorothy escaped from Kansas, and you can too. Try renaming the mountain dog "Toto" for starters.

I guess there must be some water bodies in Kansas big enough to sail upon, but the sea beckons and horizon is more distant. At any rate, welcome to CF!

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Jim!

The mountain dog can be called Captian Jack even if it's not so original. I don't think poor Toto ever really got to leave Kansas. If the click of my heals could take us home, I'm betting it's no place I've been yet.

The bodies of water here are good for a one-seater sunfish and re-aquainting myself with the wind and the lines. The same winds blowing here blew o'er the sea and carry it's muffled beckonings all the way!

Thanks for the warm welcome
Lindsey

Re: salt deficient mermaid awash in Kansas!

Where are you in Kansas? There are lakes that allow for more than Sunfish sailing. Lake Perry Kansas has a pretty active sailing community between the two marina's and the yacht club. The largest sailboat on the lake is 40". Wind is great on the high plains. Kansas City Sailing in Lawrence KS is a great sailing resource for us Kansas sailors.

Re: salt deficient mermaid awash in Kansas!

Hi Sabrina!

I'm in Manhattan, so Tuttle Creek and Milford are close by, both with plenty of masts in the air. I haven't the means for buying a nice boat just yet and wouldn't land lock my deep keel dream boat without a better course to the ocean.

I'm most interested in refamiliarizing myself and developing my sealegs for a while of crewing rather than skippering. Perhaps then I'd be more ready to decide if a live-aboard lifestyle is for me. I posted a plea on craigslist to any local sailor who might be willing to let me tag along some this season.

Whereabouts are you? Lake Perry? Not sure where that is. So, might you enjoy some good sailing company and maybe a few laughs at the expense of a greeny?
