Sailing Trip

My name is Casey and my wife is Gerda we are new members.
We have been sailing our C&C 30 for the last four years on Lake Huron, sold the boat and we now are the proud owner of a Catalina 380 ( Toucan )
We will sail her back to Bayfield Ontario from Waukegan.
We have to cross over Lake Michigan and come around to Lake Huron.
The plan is to leave mid May 2015.
Any advice or warnings are much appreciated, we are not the most experienced
sailors but are not scared either.
Thanks.

BOATS ARE SAFE IN THE HARBOUR, BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT BOATS ARE BUILD FOR.

Re: Sailing trip

Congrats on the new purchase!

Unfortunately I can't give insight on your trip, though, as I am sitting on the opposite end of the continent.

Re: Sailing Trip

Casey,
Crossing Lake Michigan is easy as it's just an over-nighter. Once your on the West side of Michigan the harbors are about 10 miles apart and full of marinas or anchoring spots. Really there isn't anything to be worried about from a sailing perspective. Since it's a new boat though, I'd spend a few days around Waukegan making sure the diesel and running rigging is ok. If you need company for a few days we live on the West side of Michigan and I can give you some assistance depending on the date. I also have lots of friends in Chicago who have cottages in Holland who may be up for a crossing.

Re: Sailing Trip

You need to visit Door County, Wisconsin as you head north. Cross over to Beaver island and enjoy.
