Sailing For Peace of Mind

I'm cashing in my chips and going for a 2 year hiatus on the sea. I bought a westerly centaur 26' In England and have four months left at my current job. I'm going to sale my truck, motorcycle, and invest all my money in the boat and a good size kitty to last me the time.

So far this community has shown be good things. I hope more is to follow.

I've heard of some crazy plans in my life.

This is a sane one.

Re: Sailing For Peace of Mind

you could do worse than cruise the spanish ria's for a season, perfect territory for a "mud hopper",just delivered a westerly griffon to ribadeo, north spain ,big tides but a beautiful part of the world, and relatively un-explored by the masses, visitors berth was 56 euro for the week!

Re: Sailing For Peace of Mind

Thanks everyone for the responses. It would be neat to run into someone along the way.

It shall be cold in December, I'm sure....lol....but that's when My job is up and that is when I make it canary Islands, Hopefully we set off across before Christmas.

Maybe we will hit the Mediterranean on our way back around, but we want to get to the Caribbean before Hurricane Season and head through the Panama in rhythm.

Fair Winds Indeed, Ciao.

Re: Sailing For Peace of Mind

Be watchful past October from Portugal. Gales can sweep the area cleanly.

If you happen to be late before the gales, sit out in a nice spot like Faro or Cadiz, then go like a bat when the window opens. Make some Westing too (esp. from Cadiz area) as if you get a gale it will try to bash you onto Maroccan coast.

+A1... Mid - late December is the start of the wet season in Portugal as the fronts move further S...
Pick your windows carefully and hop down from Porto (I assume).
Fig da Foz maybe 16hrs... 12hrs to Peniche and same to Cascais.. run round to Setubal then Sines and round to Lagos..
Be careful at Fig.. if there's a fair swell keep on to Penche 60 miles on... I've wintered on the hook at Olhau up by the indoor markets..
If you've a good hook and chain you'll be fine and if it gets bad they don't (didn't) get upset if you tie onto the pontoons the fishermen use till it dies down... good anchorage (but isolated) SE corner of Cadiz Bay with Porto Sherry Marina to your N.. or anchor to the E of the breakwater at Porto Sherry about 200yds off the beach..

Re: Sailing For Peace of Mind

Thanks for the info, We are heading from Porto as Boatman implied. Our plan was to fully provision in Porto, and hop down to Lisbon, and then to faro sounds good. Then shoot off from there, I can't see a reason staying close to Africa, if not just to say I've been to morocco.
