quit job and sail around the world
A month into the pandemic, I made the mistake of googling "quit my job and sail around the world." And found a whole world of people who have done just that. I'm about halfway between dreamer stage and planning stage.
I'm a long time lurker and first time poster. I've been sailing since I was 5 and raced for many years in the Sierra lakes of California. I've crewed on boats in SF Bay, usually during the chill beer-can races on Friday nights. I stumbled upon Sailing Uma, then SV Delos, then Follow The Boat, and many others. I get that the videos are edited and focused on the entertainment, I've taken that part to heart, let it motivate me and then try to pull the nugs out that I feel are important to help plan and the plan forward. My family has 2 Cal 20s, 1 Catalina 30 and a Butterfly (dingy sailor). We're based in the CA foothills. Nautically, we're relocating the the CA delta. We are currently targeting 18 months to take off cruising. As you can imagine I'm full of questions, none which I'll ask in this post, but I just wanted to introduce myself and thank the community for all of the posts I've read thus far!

Not that I’m the voice for the Cruisersforum by any means, but welcome aboard! I’ve been where you are today, and whether you do end up casting off for distant shores or sailing your coastal waters, you have a home here.
Welcome!!!
I look forward to your posts as you seek new information and share your adventures with us.

Charliethetall Your like a "Lamb to the slaughter" with your thread starter. To your credit you have not mentioned your own blog, YouTube channel or crowd funding yet.
Good luck on your mission, once the borders open again I think a lot of people will be out cruising again.
Cheers

Ahoy charlie:
Personally I think your intentions make you sound more than a bit crazy.
But not to worry, that means you'll fit in fine with all the rest of us.

My understanding is that some countries have a quarintine period to enter the country.

Very helpful post. He did mention he'll be preparing for 18 months. The world will likely be different by then.
Oh and welcome.

Re: quit job and sail around the world
Thanks all! Yeah, if the pandemic isn't over in a year an a half or there is some other global calamity that gets in the way, we'll of course alter our plans.

Re: quit job and sail around the world
Don't let the whole pandemic thing slow you for a second. I'm not. 8 months to the big move from Texas to MD in May, 2021, then 6 months later, we go to the Caribbean. From there, we'll see where the passport allows us to go - the plan is through the canal and off to our friends in Ecuador.
Sure, right now, our passports aren't good for anything except propping up a wobbly table leg, but I figure to plan like I'll be able to go on time, and worse case scenario, I have a fully prepared boat, a well trained and experienced "crew", and a limited set of cruising options for a while.
And as I'm sure you're already learning, ask a sailing question, get 15 opinions from 10 different sailors (not sure how that math works, but I assure you it does...) Enjoy the forums and welcome.

And you can always buy a boat on the east coast and cruise. I have many friends that left Belize just before hurricane season. They are having a great time exploring from the Chesapeake up thru Maine.

Re: quit job and sail around the world
Welcome aboard! I am right there with ya and we are prepping 3 years in advance learning and planning to embark on our adventure of retiring 15 years early to sail. Planning on
selling everything except 1 acre. I think COVID and tragedy has many of us either awoke or we have completely gone mad, but dreams are dreams and if you dont follow them that's all they will ever be. Good luck to ya, it can be done.

And don't forget the definitions:
cruising is going from port to port to buy replacement parts
cruising to foreign countries is going from country to country to buy those parts in another language
