Slang for an Australian is an Aussie which sounds like Ozzie hence an Ozzie is from Oz.

Wizzard of OZ...

I like to think that is because we believe ourselves to be at the end of a mythical road, with an undeserved reputation and can be quite unkind to visitors...

And of course the national motto is "A## beats class".

don't buy into that whole "Aussie mystique" thing. just watch Crocodile Dundee, and you'll be a veritable Aussie expert!

They like it. So why shouldn't we?

So what do people where you are from call themselves? I find that quite interesting. We have a great many places represented and there are terms used to describe people that are different from us or you (often not very nice) but what do people choose to call themselves?

I live in the US, in southern Alabama. I guess they call us "rednecks". I prefer "Southern Gentleman", "Southerner", "Beachbum", "Ladies Man"...etc.

Its just one of those things......We have lots of strange ways. For example the pronounciation of Oz tray leea is more like Horse trail leea. We in summer (no make that all year round) put on our feet what other countries put between their bum cheeks. What the Americans sit on is "the map of Tasmania" in "Stryne". We have a day off for a horse race and have managed to sell off overseas every uniquely and loved Australian brand. We still dont get that the rest of the world thinks that vegimite tastes like crap. We have a population of 20 million and are absolutely convinced that the rest of the world actualy cares what we think. And yes Kangaroos really do hop down the main street.....really !!

ps Most Australians that make a bucket load of money ( like Paul Hogan ) go and live overseas, where as heaps of overseas born rich come and live here....

Here we are called "Crapauds" (Norman French for Toads ) and "Beans" (English for.....Bean )
I think Bean is the insult, but I get confused
