Smile Proud new Owner of a Bouncing Baby Boat (pocket cruiser)

Hello Fellow Sailors,

I joined back in Feb when I was looking for a boat. I have since found one that speaks to me, so I bought it in the middle of the covid crisis. It's a 1981 Shannon 28. I have a lot of projects to do so I'm eager to hear about maintenance and upgrades to pocket cruisers. I've joined the Shannon Owners group here, with its 5 posts (2017). I've already received some great advice on Cruisers Forum (about the possibility of buying a boat in the UK), and I'm hoping to hook up for Puget Sound cruises with new friends.

Cheers,
~Water Trails

Hey, mate, congratulations on your new lady! However, to me, she is not a "pocket cruiser." Those are under 25 ft. Consider the Flicka, at 22 ft. Yours is a boat, she is not tiny.

Cheers,

Ann

Congrats on the new boat! Shannons have a great reputation, a friend of mine has a 31 I think.. loves it. I'm sure you will too.

Jim you must be getting brain freeze down there in Tassie?!
Plenty of people on this forum would consider 28 feet to be a daysailer. Heck we both know from this forum you would'nt even consider 28 feet a starter boat.
The Shannon 28 looks nice Water Trails and just the right size to have a lot of fun and not break the bank.

Cheers

Re: Proud new Owner of a Bouncing Baby Boat (pocket cruiser)

^^^^Nah, not Jim, but Ann, the Philistine! And I stand by that. We've met people who circumnavigated in 20, 21, and 22 ft. boats, as well as 25 and 26.

People have larger wants today, but one of those, the 26, had 2 bits of electronic gear: a depth sounder and a VHF radio. This was in the days before GPS, before electronic charting. People used to get used charts off the commercial boats, the copra schooners, etc. Best was a survey ship!

You can think of it as a day sailer if you want, or you can turn it into a crcumnavigator, with work and imagination, and perseverance, it can see you safe. ....And as people are fond of saying, the under 30 footers enjoy the same anchorages and sunsets as the 80 footers.

Yes, we have a big boat now, at 46 ft., but we did round trip a Yankee 30 from San Francisco to HI, paper charts and celestial. I'm not just bs-ing. It is experience based.

And now back to congratulating Water Trails on his new boat, may she bring him much pleasure.

Ann

Re: Proud new Owner of a Bouncing Baby Boat (pocket cruiser)

Hi, Water Trails,

For the record, Jim's posts show our boat under spinnaker and it says "Jim Cate" for his screen name. Mine, has JPA Cate, and the A is Ann. My avatar picture was taken by a friend, on our way from Southwest Cape to Port Davey, Tasmania. His is on the Derwent River, south of Hobart. Sorry for the confusion.

Lovely looking boat. Good on ya!

Ann
