Paul's Introduction

Hi Folks,
I learned to sail on my dad's homebuilt 8-Ball, and then on his re-habbed mahogany Enterprise (14').
Tough, he was. I'm not an accomplished sailor but his lessons stuck.

Now, I'm going on an adventure with my 73 Fuji 35. It begins with the rehabilitation of the Shiboleth. The boat came to me with no name ! It took 2 weeks to choose Shiboleth. First the cute pun: Ketch Can, then; Quite a Ketch. The dull: Maturity (vs Felicity or Syncronicity, etc..) took a very brief turn. I like Shiboleth. I learned the word (Hebrew) from Martin Sheen on West Wing. Looking it up isn't as romantic as living the story...

So, lot-o-work ahead. Diesel is a brand new experience. I'm not mechanically oriented. I never stepped a mast 8"x6"x35' of composite douglas fir... 150#s? Why couldn't it be Sitka spruce?
Also ahead: cockpit carpentry (gonna cheap-out with 'African teak'), and of course, plenty of epoxy, varnish, and paint.

I hope I will be able to count on the many salty and wise people who frequent my local docks to advise me and earn their professional stripes without breaking my poor bank, cuz, I am out here all alone.

Greetings to all, and I'll be seeing you!
Paul

Re: Paul's Introduction

G'day, Paul,

Welcome aboard CF.

About the Sitka spruce, check the costs to have one made: that should answer the question.

Diesel engines have a lot of similarity to each other. The least expensive way to get started would be a community college course in diesel mechanics, plus it would put you with some folks who are also starting from the steep end of the learning curve.

I see you're in Alameda. We lived aboard in Alameda for a while. Which marina is your boat at? Long term boat owners usually know where the bargains might be found.

Good luck with your venture into Shiboleth owning.

Ann

(PS. You can read about Jim and me in our profiles, should you wish to. We are long term cruisers.)

Re: Paul's Introduction

Welcome Aboard Paul.

Looking forward to hearing about your adventures - before and after leaving the dock!

There is surplus of diesel mechanics on CF, some formally trained, some trained by the school of hard knocks. Some even know what they are talking about and you will soon work who they are .

Enjoy your CF experience!
