Not Even Able to Call Myself Newbie !

Hi guys!
As the title says, i am only on the "perhaps this is something for me" stage. As a father of two, and married i need to have completed my checklist before even thinking of buying a sailing boat.
However, i hope im still welcome to this forum for q'n'a and try to get some insight to this way of boating.

I am from Norway so english is my seccond language. Hope that's not a problem!

Anything you might want answered, please do ask! Ill bring an answer asap

Re: Not even able to call myself newbie!

Hi liaven and welcome.

Your English is just fine and don't worry, no one cares at all as long as you don't ask us to reply in Norwegian.

I really hope one day to be able to cruise Norway. I hear it is quite lovely but maybe a bit cooler than I am used to in Florida.

Let me give you just one warning. Attraction to boats and sailing can be very dangerous. I had never been on a sail boat in my life, went cruising one time to the Bahamas with friends and I was never the same again.

Children are great on boats and I think a fantastic education. I lived on board and cruised with my daughter for about a year and do not regret a minute. Just have to take some extra safety precautions, just like you would at home, to deal with things that are a risk to children.

Regards

Thank you for the kind words!
My motor boat got stolen a month ago.. so i have some boating experience, however, sailing is something I've never tried..
I do think that i might get hooked.. hopefully my wife do too
I'm using this winter to read up and getting abit familiare with terms and so forth.. then join the local sailing club here and do a course on sailing. Will every sailboat need a crew for sailing? My son is five and my daughter is three so i can't enroll them just yet.. he he
You should sail norway if you get the chance.. can be rough seas though!

Re: Not even able to call myself newbie!

It is easier for some tasks but it is not necessary to have a crew for a sailboat, even a larger one. You would need to set up your rigging and equipment properly and need some method to steer the boat while the captain sets the sails or other work.

I have a 14 meter sailboat that I have sailed solo several times, mainly day sailing but also made a 600 Km trip in a 10 meter boat solo.

Re: Not even able to call myself newbie!

Ah ok, that is nice to hear. If/when the day comes and i get to try sailing i will have my wife with me on longer trips.
This summer will be pure learning though, so ill be joining a local club as i live right by the water. And just see how it goes i guess
Again, thank you for the welcome, and help so far.

Takk skal du ha.

Welcome to CF. I see you have discovered the smilies ......this one was created especially for Norwegians .

If trying to get the wife and kids keen on sailing I would start by chartering somewhere warm. The cold, wet and miserable can come later

Re: Not even able to call myself newbie!

Thank you!
About wife and kids, i've already gotten the application for it signed OK from her to start with the sailcourses and be crew for others there, so this summer should be good learningcurve. And then.. when/if i feel like buying a sailing boat instead of motorboat i will only have her come along on summer breeze kind of weather. (ayeh we do get those in Norway too... atleast one day a year.. hehe)
Hehe i should use the viking smiley as my main smiley huh.

thank you again for the welcome!

Velkommen ombord, liaven!

I also have two young ones (2 and 4), and if all goes well I'll be getting a boat this winter and be sailing as soon as the ice breaks off the Minnesota lakes (yay!)

Thinking of moving back to Norway in a few years, and will at some point be looking for info on bringing a boat with, so if you know anything about that process, I'm all ears..
