Newbies

First post: After 32 years of coastal cruising between Maine and Block Island mostly on 2 week vacations, My wife and I are finally going to cast off the dock lines and head down the ICW then head to the Bahamas on our 42 ft sloop next year. Plan to be south 6 months, then up the Hudson to Nova Scotia and Maine for 6 months Looking for advice on whether to install dinghy davits now or just tow our 10ft hard bottom Avon (engine off of course). Also is getting fresh water a problem in the Bahamas? Any other feedback (favorite spots or places to avoid) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Newbies

Welcome aboard Magic Dragon! Good luck in your ventures. Personally I am in the camp of favoring davits over towing, but if you are motoring over long distances in calm protected waters, then towing is fine. Once out in the open, it's a different story, imo.

Re: Newbies

The dingy dock in Georgetown Exumas has free fresh water.

Re: Newbies

Most cruisers in the Bahamas don't have Watermakers. Water is available, but your stops needed to be planned, and you may have to pay for it. The going price seems to be $0.40 to $0.50 per gallon. One of the reasons Georgetown is so popular is water at the dinghy dock is free. Watermakers are a convenience, not necessity in the Bahamas. We have a Watermaker.

Welcome. Also check out the thread Raindrops Keep falln On My Head. I have access to Shore Water that I filter for drinking, Rainwater for everything else. I can drink it but it tastes soft.

To quote the late great John Illingworth, "It is worth almost any sacrifice toi carry your dinghy onboard."

Welcome.
