pirate New to the Salt Life

Good afternoon everyone 👋
We are Yume and Yuna, a mom and her little chick...I am going to be 34 this August and after years of the rat race and now everything in USA being so crazy and unsafe...I have decided my future is going to be sailing the world, making content, writing and homeschooling my daughter with the whole world as our classroom. Currently we are land locked and saving, researching, studying and making plans but another 2-3 years in the rat race isn't my favorite idea....so I thought...while I have a degree, amazing experience and skills...maybe I can find a crew starting position that allows kids...and work on a sailboat and gain experience in what I love ❤️ before buying my own boat. So...here I am...here to make friends...learn...and if lucky find a boat needing a crew member or even companionship (nothing inappropriate not that type of woman thank you very much) but I hope to get to know everyone...hope that you all have a great day of good wind and no storms...clear sailing to all ❤
Yume and Yuna

Re: New to the Salt Life

With all respect, it sounds like you have a romantic idea of sailing. I suggest you move somewhere near the sea, take sailing lessons, buy a small sailing dinghy (best way to actually learn to sail), and offer to crew on day races through the local yacht club. These are the best ways to learn about sailing and gain experience.

What are your "degree, amazing experience and skills" and how would these relate to cruising the world?

With a small child, you will find it very difficult to find a "starting" crew position, unless you are in a "relationship" with the skipper; why else would anyone take on a complete novice AND a small child?

Apologies if I sound sceptical, but in my 50 years of sailing/cruising I've seen hundreds of romantic sailing dreams shattered on the rocks of hard reality.

Re: New to the Salt Life

Thank you for your reply...but I ask you as a sailor...dont you have to have a deep love and romance for the sea to live on or near it? Yes I lived in Key West on a boat...just didn't take it anywhere and rode a dingy daily to get to and from my boat...I just havent sailed myself or learned...I also lived all over Florida for 6 years, as well as lived in Hawaii (which is kinda in its own way like living on a boat in the middle of the ocean just bigger and not a boat haha, but the cost of living is expensive and you have to be resourceful with your supplies) I also lived in Japan for over 4 years...as to my ademic skills and professional experience, I have a degree in business management from Florida state, also have worked as general manager, store manager, as well as higher management supervisor specialist. These skills could be useful for a family ship looking for someone to be their face and manager of their business as well as many other things...yes I know finding a position as a novice and having a small child will be difficult but from what I heard for the most part the sailing community is a friendly and helpful group so I feel my disposition and skills will lead me to the right people in the community that I can connect with and be friends with...so I appreciate your kind reply.

Re: New to the Salt Life

I'm not sure about the deep love and romance for the sea always being the motivation for living on or near the sea...

Me, I just love sailing and sailboats. Living on a non-moving boat as you did or on a motorboat wouldn't interest me, though I spent 14 years cruising around the Pacific on 3 of my own boats.
With your experience and skills, I would imagine you might try to get a job working for a super rich family who had businesses and a super yacht and needed your type of skills, but in that case, you'd probably be shore-based.

The ordinary yacht owner who is actually cruising the world typically doesn't have an active business; is living off investments, savings, etc and wouldn't need a business manager on board their yacht.

Of course there are the youtubers who spend heaps of time making videos for wannabe sailors who they get to subsidize their cruising. These people typically they have their own cute kid and beautiful blonde-haired wife to populate their videos, and they do their own managing.

It sounds like you are looking for many things: a job, a life on the water, getting out of what I call the "Evil Empire" (I'm an ex-Yank who bailed out of there years ago and now live in NZ).

Yes, the sailing community can be very friendly and helpful: most of my friends over the years have been part of that community. Who knows, you might get lucky; may the Force Be With You.

Re: New to the Salt Life

Well the way I see it is you have to either love the water and sailing or your just crazy to live a sailors life haha I'm half way in the middle...but I guess anyone has to be a little crazy to take a sailboat into the open blue haha I bet the pacific was amazing to sail. That is an area I plan to spend quite a few year...I love the islands in that area from Thahiti to Bora Bora...and I am a huge history person (part of the reason I love sailing) so being able to retrace Cooks exploring routes and go to the same islands he did when he went there in 1768 would be amazing. NZ must be wonderful and some beautiful places to sail to. Yes I am hoping that I can find a rich family needing assistance with their stuff or even needing someone to help clean, maybe have my kiddo be a playmate for theirs...there are options for sure and as a very wise master once said "Do or do not, there is not try", so if I keep studying all my sailing books, keep improving myself and keep putting myself out there in the community...you never know...sometimes you fish and never catch anything but then there is a change in the tide and the fish come...just have to do my best and wait for the right one...I would love to know more about your sailing adventures in South pacific...I bet you have some amazing stories..Also yes now days there are youtubers and most fit a pattern...which is why I think it's about time for the younger ones to start bring back the good sailing culture online, real information like how to fix and repair things, the hardships and the Triumphs...not just always cute wife, everyday sunny and spending money eating out...those are more like vacations to me...I know life at sea isn't easy...but honestly nowhere is easy these days...so would I rather have a hard time landlocked in BFE wasting my life working for the system...or have a some hard times, but be doing what I love (sailing and exploring) with the freedom to raise my daughter and be able to see the world before I someday die...we all do someday, some sooner than others...and im tired of wasting it making someone else rich fat and happy and sacrificing myself and my daughters life for someone else...

Good on ya Yume for having a dream, being open to change, and wanting to give your daughter an interesting life in these crazy times.

Follow your dream and give your kid the gift of an interesting life. I suggest moving if you can to some place near the sea and get your kid into sailing.

Hi, Yume, and welcome to the forum!
I suppose you will have to determine where you fall on the spectrum between paralyzing caution and reckless abandon. I would not "block out the naysayers", but rather evaluate what they say and decide for yourself if it applies to you. Fools are doomed to learn everything the hard way, while the wise learn from others' mistakes. I trust as a mother you will err on the side of caution when it come to the safety of your daughter.
My recommendation is to reach out to Nike of WhiteSpotPirates for tips from the perspective of a young woman who does much of her sailing solo.

P.S. There are many women on this forum who would also be willing to give you their perspectives on your plans if you ask for it.

Re: New to the Salt Life

Here are the screen names of a few of the women on CF, who have experience with boats:
in alphabetical order: gamayun; djousset; Franziska; Leecea; Pippa B; Solani; Wolfgal.

I left myself out of the list. I am a long term cruiser, but married.

Incidentally, there is a thread here called Single Sailors Seeking Soulmates, if you are interested in that.

Re: New to the Salt Life

Hello Ann, I think the single sailors seeking soulmates is gone. I think Zeehag left and the group got shut down.

If I was SailingYume this is where I would be looking!

Re: New to the Salt Life

Kind of depends on where she is located, Sam. If in California, Lat would be a good place to look if she were single. But she and the daughter will need two berths on most boats, and she is hoping to be paid as well. Seems kind of unlikely to me, but there's never harm in trying. Untried crew are always a risk, and a young child, to boot, needing caretaking even on the gentle downwind sail that the Baja HaHa represents. It will take a very special skipper to be willing to front up for that Not impossible, but pretty rare. Most of their kids are grown, too, but they're not strangers to child rearing.

Just my opinion, of course, but maybe Women Who Sail (on FB) would be a better option? Also, I would encourage purchasing a used Mirror or El Toro, and getting involved in sailing in her spare time with her daughter. It will get them on the water, used to sailing, and make sailors out of them, which would increase their potential as crew, and get a little age on the 3 yr. old, both of which would help with the goal.

Re: New to the Salt Life

Welcome.

I would suggest updating your profile with your general location and your boat make & model or “Looking” in the "Boat" category. This info shows up under your UserName in every post in the web view. Many questions are boat and/or location dependent and having these tidbits under your UserName saves answering those questions repeatedly. If you need help setting up your profile then click on this link: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3308797

I would happily help more if the link above is not enough.
