New to the Sailing World

Hello to all you friendly people. First let me share what i've been thinking about wanting to do. I'm married with 3 young children (6,4 & 2) yrs old. Sold my house and hoping to purchase a catamaran around 40ft with the intentions of living onboard. i have a power boat license but no experience in sailing at all. For the first few years onboard we will probably stay in the marina or just sail in the near by area of Singapore to gain experience. thank you for all your good advice.

Welcome to CF and your plans sound great. What does the marinas in your area think about liveaboard families? Kids running and playing on the docks at happy hour ? I'm sorry I still think like I'm in a middle class America marina and you'r not.

Hi Darren - And welcome to Cruisers Forum!

Our Cruising Info section has articles on Family Cruising & Cruising with Teens that you might find interesting. Also, with all the shipping traffic around Singapore, you should read about AIS - VERY useful in those waters.

The best way to get experience, of course, is to get out & DO IT! Unfortunately you won't get much sailing practice around Singapore - not much wind most of the time. We do occasional "Learn to Cruise" charters if you want (we're currently in Phuket). At the least, motor up to Danga Bay to get to know how the boat handles. We also know some 38' cats in the area that are for sale.

In the NE monsoon, go up the west coast of Malaysia (we have a Cruising Malaysia page that might help). In the SW monsoon, you might want to join the East Malaysia Rally to go up the east coast to some of the beautiful islands & clear water, or even over to Borneo. Going with a rally, there'll be lots of folks to help & answer questions.

Hope this helps!
