New To Sailing

Let me introduce my self Mark Rocco Monteverdi some people call me Mark...some Rocco and some Monty so what ever is comfortable will do....I'm new to sailing don't have a boat as of yet..Currently I'm living in Wilmington NC so if any one knows were I can get some sailing lesson I would greatly appreciate that!!...for now just reading all books that pertain to sailing watched the DVD learn how to sail out of Annapolis watching another one by John Rousmaniere also out of Annapolis...
After I get my sailing lesson I would like to rent different size boats to get the feel and also see what kind of boat I would like. Long term plan about five years down the line I would like to be living on board that is my dream...so for now just want to learn how to sail...I know from reading many books....you get better every time you sail and you will always learn some thing new weather it be on the water or in a tavern in conversation ....so I'm looking forward to any and all replies...just please don't say I'm crazy with this....... my x-wife would say that....did I mention X-wife...so ladies and gentlemen a fast forward Thank you to all!!!

Re: New To Sailing

Howdy Mark! Welcome aboard the forum.

I've been to Wilmington. You are not too far from many boats (look for boats for sale in New Bern).

Since you are now learning by books and DVDs, I will mention two other sources for some sailing videos:

1. Youtube.
Free videos. Some of voyagers, some of knot tying, etc.

2. Amazon.com "Prime" streaming video service.
This gives access to a number of free to see videos about sailing, if you already are an Amazon Prime member.
________________

And here is a FREE online resource that many people miss:

3. Free LOADS of sailing info found in the Cruising Wiki linked via this forum site (just look on this forum site for the link on the WIKI tab up on the top menu.)

Good luck and have fun dreaming and then making your dreams come true.

Steady

Re: New To Sailing

I used to sail Lightnings out of the Carolina Yacht Club on Wrightsville beach. At least 15 years ago it was a fun place to hang out with decent sailing classes and a lot of good people.

Check wth them. Worst case they will send you to a sailing school nearby.

Re: New To Sailing

Mark, you are no crazier than a few million other people in the world. Sailing is a wonderful hobby and/or lifestyle. You'll love it.

Don't hesitate to find a lake or protected small bay where you can rent little open sailboats to learn about wind and the very basics of sailing. Even sailboarding will teach you many things crucial to getting there and back using the wind.

Good luck and have fun.
