New sailors from Ohio

New sailors from Ohio stopping in to give a quick hello. Pondered sailing for 6 mos, took 4-day sailing course a month ago, loved it, bought an older Hunter 28.5 for a beginner boat and ready to give sailing a good hard try. If anyone has advice on sailing Lake Erie, wind, gusts, good, quiet and friendly marinas between Lorain and Cleveland or just sailing in general feel free to send me a message.

Welcome ! Here's a quick primer - north east wind - bad ( the fetch gets the lake rolling ) . If you are out there and you feel the wind go cold -
GET OFF THE LAKE, it spins up fast .
The best way to think about it is , put 2 inches of water in a bathtub and slosh around , you get violent water reactions because it's so shallow.
Wind can vary from 0 to over 60 knots - I guess like anywhere , but the waters reaction to it can be shocking at first.
We are in Lorain ( oasis marina) and like it , are you looking for somewhere to keep the boat or places to travel to?

Thanks for that huge piece of advice, will def follow it. We were out yesterday and went be doing that again for a long while. We are currently at Whiskey (boat was already docked there) thinking somewherr a little more quiet. Checked out Spitzer yesterday. We come from T-county so either way, its a drive.

Re: New sailors from Ohio

So spitzer is the river side , they used to run the lake one too , but the port authority leased it to oasis this year . The river is fine , except for parking and the bridge .. and not really secure .

Whiskey island is certainly not the quiet type of place .. that's for sure . Rocky river would be your only option west until Lorain. If you want to go to the islands , or cedar point or anywhere out there it's a haul from Cleveland ( hence why we are here - as we live east of Cleveland ) There are options on the east side , but not a lot of places to cruise to . If you are just looking to day sail then that's not as big a deal .

Re: New sailors from Ohio

We have checked out Oasis and really like it there. Went during day and night.....saw some suspicious activity, but hope that isn't much of an issue when we stay on boat. Seems like many more updates to come this winter. Any suggestions near Oasis for winter storage besides Spitzer? Thanks.
