New Member in Panama En Route to Sea of Cortez

Hi everybody. I'm actually at home in Arizona as I write this, but in 10 days I am headed back to Panama to rejoin with my 1974 vintage 41 ft Gulfstar sloop in Panama, at Shelter Bay Marina. Plan to traverse the canal in mid-Jan and head for San Carlos, Mexico, with two friends as crew. Any advice re routing and recommended ports of call/stopping/reprovisioning points would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Bill,

We are in the San Carlos right now, just bought a new to us boat here.

The boat is a Southern Cross 35' Cutter named 'Nanna'

We will explore the Sea for a few months at least, but probably until after next hurricane season. If you see us come on over and say 'hello'

Panama to Mexico

Hi Bill, I am currently reading "Sou'west in Wanderer IV" (Eric Hiscock) and though it dates back to 73, I found his description of their trip through the canal, Costa Rica and on up to the Sea of Cortez very interesting and informative. It might be worth reading if you have time and can get a copy. He discusses prevailing winds, currents, anchorages and some of the local history and culture. I will be in Costa Rica in late January but I will probably miss you as I expect you will be through there before then. You may be in our neck of the woods if you pass through Golfito.
Happy sailing...
-Kevin
