hi, All. Used to cruise many years ago on a 29' Cascade Sloop. I now find myself the owner of not one, but 2 Meridian 25's, one in my yard, the other in NJ.

The plan, such as it is, is to sail boat #2 from NJ to Maine this spring, with my novice son (32) as crew. The boat is on the Delaware river, but could probably be trucked to the Atlantic side of Jersey relatively inexpensively, which would save a day or two of sailing/motoring, and avoid the commercial traffic around Philadelphia.

Any suggestions, hints, warnings? Can I take the ICW from Philly up to NYC? Is going through Hell's Gate to be avoided in a small boat, or is it better to go inside and and avoid sailing around Long Island?

I am guessing that I can make the trip in about 2 weeks, presuming I can average 4.5 knots and 12 hrs/day of sailing. Am I off my rocker? Are there worthwhile shortcuts? Is there a best time to attempt this, or a time to avoid?

Any advice or help would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Robert

Welcome aboard, Robert! You won't be able to use parts of the NJICW unless you're vertical clearance is less that 35' -- little problem otherwise for shoal-draft boats with skippers who carefully follow the channels. The ICW runs from Cape May to Manasquan (then outside for the last leg), so you'd need to take the sometimes-nasty Delaware Bay from Philly to Cape May. Where you need to go outside (if so) you can duck in the inlets and anchor or tie up at a marina. Hells Gate would need to be done around slack tide with a careful watch for eddies and all that other traffic that also waited for slack (a good cruising guide can help you plan & navigate...(hint, hint)). You will need to allow for much more time than two weeks -- you may wait several days at a time for a safe weather window for offshore passage. Have a safe and fun cruise back to Maine.

WElcome to the forum, I'm not on here like many, but saw this and wanted to say hi: currently in NJ, and (hopefully) moving up to Maine in the spring, fair winds!
