Yeah. A trip down the coast to Santa Cruz Island and environs would be a lot of fun. For hanging around there or really anywhere among the islands you’ll want at least two, but three is better, sets of ground tackle. You’ll be looking to
anchor typically in 20 to 40 ft of
water depth. Some places are tight, requiring bow & stern
anchoring. Both tackle sets with proper setting should be equally capable of holding the yacht in strong
wind, typically 25 to 35 kt when strong, sometimes higher depending on location. Otherwise, the
wind may be light to moderate throughout a day. Two nice stops along the way are Morro Bay harbor and Port San Luis, about 20 n.mi. further south. Cell phone/WiFi
service is spotty to non-existent at the islands, usually the latter if further west than Scorpion; no
commercial services. You should have the
equipment to receive NOAA
weather broadcasts on
VHF; check every update (4 times a day) but
reception is blocked along some
parts of the south coast of Santa Cruz Island if in close, etc.
