New member - Canada to Greenland/Iceland this year

Just saying hi.
We'll share our trip in various places, including here.
At this time, we're looking for insurance for this northern route. Quote requests are out to a couple of companies, but if you have any suggestions, please share,.
Thank you.

Re: New member - Canada to Greenland/Iceland this year

Erin,

We too are visiting Greenland by sailboat this summer and have a question that you might have already researched.
Like any larger cruise ship, our sailboat has a liquor locker that has a stock of alcohol for the ship's onboard crew during the extended trip from and back to Canada and the USA. This alcohol will remain on the ship during the trip. Will we have any trouble about this issue when clearing into Greenland?
Safe travels and fair winds,
Thom

GREENLAND from Halifax
Very interested in chatting with sailors who have done or are deeply planning this. This is now on the bucket list and planning for 2024 is underway. Current questions
1. Is May better than September? Yes, more ice in May, more chance of dying hurricane low pressure system in Sept, but likely warmer waters. Anyone have good information on this?
2. What’s it like over there? Are there multiple interesting and good harbors?
3. Should we go and come back, or carry on to Iceland and Ireland?
4. Is this a f’ing stupid idea?

I have 35,000 nm, but mostly in the trades and a few runs up/down through the mid latitudes to NZ. 38 foot sloop.

Love to hear some thoughts!

Fair winds.

@Deblen - thanks! Great video. Tough sailors.

I wonder if the ice is still so far south or if now nearly a decade later global warming has reduced the range of the bergs materially. I noticed they made the trip in early July.

Re: New member - Canada to Greenland/Iceland this year

Not crazy, but certainly challenging. I’m based in Lewisporte, on the NE side of Newfoundland. There are a number of local boats that have made the trip up to northern Labrador and Greenland. We’ve had our share of NW Passage makers come through as well, mainly because this is probably the last good marina location before heading north.

Most who do the journey try to leave here as early as possible in June, but this varies depending on the iceberg flow. Some years it has been light, but then you get years like this one where I can still see them floating around down here in August (there is one three miles from where I am anchored right now).

You just have to start watching the ice charts, and also the wind patterns, early in the year to assess how dangerous the journey is that year. It’s hard to make predictions from year to year.
