Re: my first sailboat!
Get someone experienced (preferably 2 or 3 experienced people) to go out with you on that....
Too big for raw beginner to single-hand. Don't try. Maybe after a year or two.
At least get some basic lessons also.

Re: my first sailboat!
Hi, there, yalla, welcome aboard CF.
My husband, Jim, used to sail a Yankee 30 around SF Bay, I know you're going to have a great time with your boat.
If you're the kind of guy who prefers to learn by doing and thinking about it all, well and good, but if you think you'd like instruction, there's another Canadian not too far away, a CF'er, called cwykham, whose posts I've respected, and another is jackdale.

Re: my first sailboat!
thanks for the positive replies!
i have sailed before, my very first time on a sailboat we actually dismasted (!), a mini-transat she was.
I'm a little older and wiser now...
I just did a cruise from A Coruna to Sardegna on a hallberg rassy 46.
my boats' p.o. cared for her over 20 years, and I'm leaving her at his marina for the summer so he can let her go gently, and i get to sail with he who knows her best.
the admiralette and i did a dinghy course a few years back, we're both scuba instructors and i had a diveshop years ago.
I'm looking forward to learning on my own, though i do hope to meet other sailors willing to share their experience with me.
she's very well found, a new yanmar yse12, good sails, sound hull, slick bottom. we've been out twice and had a great time, I'm still in europe, pining to get back and continue the dream!

Welcome Ed. Catalina 27 is a good boat to start with. Try starting a new thread for yourself in the "Meets and Greets" so you'll get more responses. Where are you located?

Sweet lines. You got yourself a real beauty. And with a new diesel she should be good for another 40 years.

First post sounding like someone who barely knows what water is resulted in the recommendation for NOT trying to sail it without help.
Quite a difference indicated in the second post...

No one else jumped to that conclusion, only you
And a 28 footer is in the small range of boats. It's quite quite an acceptable size to learn to sail on such a boat. Mine is my first sail boat and it's a 36 footer.

Nice Looking boat!
Learn to sail, learn her innards like the back of your hand and you should do well. Good Luck!
