motorsailers

Does anyone out there own a 40' Island Trader Motorsailer made by the Marine Trader Trawler company? We are looking into the 40' Island Trader motorsailer as an extended liveaboard boat. Understanding that they are no "sports car" when it comes to their upwind sailing ability. But have I heard they do adequately as a motorsailer. Would like to check one out. We previously owned a 40' Marine Trader trawler powerboat. There are several for sale that are a good distance from Maine. Curious if there are any of these boats between Maine & Virginia to look at to see if they would fit our needs. Gail

Re: motorsailers

An earlier thread on the same yacht doesn't sound too good with sailing characteristics.

If you wanted a motor sailer with sailing potential, there are a wide range that may be more suitable. Cast the net a little further to see what you find.

Re: motorsailers

When we shopped on motorsailers in the '90s, Nauticats and the then-new Northeast 37 (Mark Ellis design) were said to be better for actual sailing.

The Island Trader 40 was large, more space, etc... and the 46 was really huge!

Re: motorsailers

What is your definition of "Motor Sailor"? My Cal 46 was designed by Bill Lapworth to be a comfortable home, sail to weather, reach, run and has enough fuel to cross most major low wind areas. 380 gallons of diesel fuel will get me over 2,000 miles under power. We have had several long distance sails without running the engine, like east end of the Panama Canal to Mobile, AL. USA in June 1990, #3 jib and double reefed mainsail averaged 6.4 knots. Before leaving SoCal, we raced the Newport to Ensanada,Mexico several years placing in the top ten in class.

I have adequate headroom, I'm 6'3", freezer, fridge, gas stove, bunks to sleep 8 racer type crews. After 39 years of ownership, she has been perfect for my wife and I. Details and experiences on request.
