MX Mariner is a great chartplotting app, with free charts for the US and several other countries.

+1 for Sky Map and Smart Compass.

I normally use inavx on ipad but I have a copy of EarthNC on the android - though I haven't put any time into using it, charts are available (assume US charts...)

When did they release Navionics for a tablet? I can't seem to find it. I have it on my phone but didn't think it was available for a tablet.
I use EarthNC and it works OK so far, although I don't think it will navigate to more than one way point. I like it to supplement my chart plotter. I use it for the big picture with the chart plotter for navigation.

Re: marine software for android tablet

I was thinking about grabbing a cheap Dell Streak 7 and using Navionics or something like it. Does it resize to fill your tablet's screen or will it be phone size in the middle of the tablet screen?

Re: marine software for android tablet

Navionics told me a few months ago they have not tested on an Android tablet yet so they make no claims it will work. They are working on it they say. I didn't load it and instead used EarthNC.
Maybe someone else knows what it will do with regards to screen size.

Re: marine software for android tablet

I also like and use MX Mariner on my ridiculously rooted, modded and hacked android phone

I also like navionics, but the program and maps are more expensive, any I get all the functionality I need from MX Mariner.

If it's anything like the Dell Streak 5, I would avoid that unit. Gorilla glass my foot. I replaced the screen twice. After the third knee height drop (I sometimes fall asleep reading an ebook), I put it in a drawer and got my current phone.

The thread drift over. Back to the software

I bought it from Google play shop (ex android market).Works well for basic things. Uploading maps sometimes just doesn't work from all areas, dunno why..

I wasn't really married to the Dell, I was shopping for an Android tablet that was 1) cheap and 2) had a waterproof Otterbox available for it.

The Motorolas, Samsungs and Dells have cases available but most of the more off-brand ones do not.

True. I was looking at an off-brand Chinese tablet, but they did not have any waterproof cases. By adding the right software and a GPS antenna, one can get the same (and greater) functionality as a chart plotter.

It's all about personal taste. Don't let my mini rant discourage you from picking up a tablet you like. I just has a terrible experience with mine. Others did not. I think Samsung's are excellent. Iv'e had 3 different ones. Dropped them all repeatedly on tile and concrete, and barely had a scratch on them.

I'm running MX Mariner and testing out the newest OpenCPN beta. Both are great programs and saved me from buying a hard mounted chart plotter and GPS.

Cheers & Happy Sailing!!!

Navionics for Android Tablet is now available

It showed up on their site this morning. Supposedly works with tablets running at least 3.1 but the only approved tablets are the eeePad Transformer and the Motorola Xoom. There's a big disclaimer for everything else.

Re: marine software for android tablet

With MX Mariner can you download other charts than the ones they sell?

I'd like to be able to pick up the inland waterways of europe and maybe the med.
