Lurking for awhile; Finally joined

Hi, all. I'm Charles. I've been sort-of lurking as a nonmember for most of three years. I thought maybe it was time to join so that I can take part in discussions which interest me instead of being an invisible and silent wall flower.

I'm pretty new to boats. I built a little skiff two years ago and tried my hand at commercial crayfishing the Columbia River (no success. I think I was setting traps in the wrong spots. I caught crayfish, and big ones, but never a saleable quantity.) Now I'm back in my beloved Alaska fjords and again contemplating building that dream yacht to take me on adventures. I have a short-list of designs but cost realities will probably mean buying a fixer-upper production solidified-snot-yacht and making do.

I can pretty well guarantee that my postings, and likely much of my reading as well, will come in spits and spurts but I like to think I'm pretty good at refraining from posting when I have nothing useful to contribute. I'm also good at asking uncomfortable questions; the kind that start snarls. Just remember if or when you see these: I'm not a troll and I really do want to know how you handle whatever fiddly uncomfortableness I'm asking about.

Right, uh... I forgot to mention I'm trying to change into a career field that might allow me to do achieve the dream of sailing around the world. A dishwasher's budget pretty much limits me to home-built dinghy sailing. Grr. I have my merchant mariner credential and STCW-95 BSTs and have been trying to find a job for a few months. Tips on open positions are encouraged (PM me); yacht jobs are not out-of-the-question but are not seen in a happy light in the world of workboats.

Aloha and welcome aboard!

I'm not certain if you can come up with a question that hasn't ever been asked before but you certainly are welcome to try.

kind regards,

Welcome aboard. I'm new too. I think requestioning from time to time is not so bad. I spend few years reading this forum and others and is so much info ( sometimes somebody starts a thread and after reading pages and pages I still don't find the answers to my q's) that makes you dizzy... but I think everybody is kind enough here to bear us the noobs... everybody had a start point some time ago.
