LONGTIME LURKER

Hi,
I am a recently retired merchant seaman looking to get into sailing and buy my first boat. I worked as a marine engineer on U.S. flag ships, mostly large container ships in the Pacific for almost 30 years. As an engineer I really didn't pay too much attention to the deck department so now have to learn navigation, rules of the road, etc. I've retired to Costa Rica but will probably buy a boat in the U.S. and live on it in Florida while learning to sail. My plan is to sail the rum line in the Caribbean for a few years.

That's terrific man. I wouldn't discount your experiences too much and I'm sure there is a ton of information that others can learn from you.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
As an engineer your mechanical skills will earn you lots of respect once you get the other learning out of the way. Almost everyone I know has had some propulsion issues along the way.
