Life Long Dream - Closer Every Day

Hello,

My name is James, I live in mid Michigan with my wife and five kids. I've wanted to cruise since I was 9 years old and now that I'm older (37) I see it as a very real possibility in the next few years.

My sailing experience is limited to a few day sails with some friends over the years but I've read up on the subject about as much as is useful without some actual time on a boat. (being obsessed with something that you never actually get to do leads to lots of reading) I'm also ridiculously prone to motion sickness, don't have a lot of money and my wife doesn't like the water

All that said: I'm doing it. So don't try and stop me!

I've been lurking around and reading the boards for a while now, but I figured it was time to sign up.
I'll be posting a slew of questions and pestering you guys for advice shortly.

James
(Bangputys is what I want to name the boat when I have one.)

Awesome - I love your determination. How will that work with 5 kids and their mother to squeeze in?

The kids are 15, 13, 12, 11 & 2 and we are thinking of having another one. To paraphrase a great movie: "We're going to need a bigger boat"

Haven't really figured that bit out yet.

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, James.

You might want to consider how “Bangputys” is going to sound on the VHF, especially after the speaker has had a few drinks.

Re: Life Long Dream Closer Every Day

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Many of my sailing friends are susceptible to seasickness and it wears off after about the 3rd day out. Some cannot function at all but some are able to do their watches but not feel well. There are remedies.
There is no remedy for a partner who doesn't care for your passion. Your kids would probably love it in varying degrees except the late teenagers who don't really like anything except their friends. Little kids love it.
kind regards,
