Lessons for a Beginner - Need Advice

I currently am looking to start sailing lessons, and being completely new to the sailing arena I would like qualified advice on where I should start. There are so many experts and I would like to hear what they have to say. I have a topic of discussion on my homepage on this very subject, thought I would post here since there are so many practicing sailors and so many educated on the subject. Thank you all for your time.

There are sailing clubs in most metropolitan areas near water. That is the best placee to start. Where are you?

Welcome aboard Cruisers Forum leilaanne and welcome to the wonderful world of sailing.

There is no quicker or more thorough way to learn the basics than to hire someone who has been professionally trained to teach sailing. Someone who knows how to sail and someone who know how to teach sailing really well is quite often not the same person.

Look for an ASA school in your area.

Also try the yacht clubs. Most every yacht club has an instructor contact.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
I recommend a basic sailing course and the book "Start Sailing Right."
You'll find there are many opinions on the subject of learning how to sail on this forum. The very best way to learn is to find what is comfortable for you and at your own pace. There are lots of books in the library on the subject.
Some sailing clubs, like mine, have sailing instruction for free or at little cost and because you are hearing from sailors with all types and kinds of experiences it is one of the best ways to learn.
kind regards,

Welcome,

I'm somewhat new here too. Wife and I took a ASA 101/103 course down in Panama City, FL had a blast and feel pretty comfortable on daysails now. I'd say the big thing to look out for with courses is to make sure you are going to be getting a lot of actual sailing time on the water, and make sure you are instructors are knowledgeable (look around the internet for customer reviews of the company).
