Introducing Myself
I just found this forum -- and couldn't wait to start reading you all! My husband and I have a 37 foot ketch on the Chesapeake and just started sailing it this summer. My sailing experience is a little light -- I sailed Lightnings with my college boyfriend, and sailed ice boats also in college. I loved it! I read "The Dove" in college, and since then, my dream has been to sail around the world. Life, however, has interfered!
DH has been sailing his whole life, and his dream was to retire on a sailboat in some southern clime. This boat is our retirement home, and while it has everything we need for sailing (and then some) it's a little lacking in the amenities for living aboard. Not to worry -- we have years to fix that!
I hope to get to know you all by reading this board! Regards,
Ruby

Welcome to the forum, Ruby.
Paul Blais will probably respond as well, and if there's anything you want or need to know about the Chesapeake, he's your man.
I hope your DH isn't CSY Man living a double life!

Welcome,
We are a small group of 6,700 of some of the best folks on the planet. They are located almost any place you could go or at least some (or one) of us have been there, so ask first before you do so yourself. My wife and I even live on the lower Chesapeake and I do know we have other members here from this part of the world too. We are on the lower (aka Fat end) of the Bay.
If you've sailed ice boats then you clearly have the right stuff. Ice Boats are seriously dangerous and seriously fun. 60 mph on ice is a bit scary when you are inches above the ice and a split second from a pressure ridge. Sailing boats is much more relaxing often punctuated with very brief moments of extreme terror..
We have 85,000 messages and many are actually life changing experiences. You'll need to sort out which ones though. Should you head this way do let me know. I always enjoy meeting members of the forum in real life. Guest dockage on our T dock can sometimes be arranged.
I have no desire to sail around the world. I only have a desire to never stop sailing. It's a subtle difference but without a destination. I can eat and drink on land as well as the water. I used to do it in ice and snow too.

I've known the CSY man a long time and believe me no one could live his life double. We own sister ships. There could be only one. I'ld sail with him anytime I could afford all the cold beer it would take.

WOW! Three replies already! Thanks for the warm welcome!
It's been a long time since I sailed ice boats -- and it wasn't the pressure ridges that got me. It was sailing too slowly across thin ice (or maybe just that I was the last in a long line of iceboaters to sail across the entrance to the harbor.) Unlike most boats, ice boats aren't made to float!

When I lived In Minnesota we called it open water.
The CSY Man is a member of the forum. He knows a lot about a lot of things, but he lives in Florida of all places - go figure.

Ice Boats?
I don't think so! 32 DegC and sunny here - again
Welcome to the forum Ruby!
Because there is no actual celebration of the 4th here and no holiday, the American Association puts on an event for the Americans. It's at a Singapore Navy yard and we are planning to watch the firework display from the boat.
Should be fun. A little Americana right here in Singapore.

Welcome aboard Ruby!
It's good to have another sailing woman aboard. I'm glad to hear you’re all pumped up about heading out on the ocean blue, a rarity for woman. We have a few here and even have a special category for ya! http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f92/
We have an abundance of info and I'm sure the reading will keep you busy. But if you can't find something in particular, just pipe up. I'm sure the answers will come your way, and with many different opinions/choices.

Hey hey, be nice Mr. Paul, just because I live in Florida does not mean I am a little old lady with blue hair and a 1960 Buick.
In fact SE Florida is a pretty good place for a part time cruiser like myself: Easy jumping off point for the Bahamas, plenty of hurricanes so we don't get bored in the fall, no income taxes, nice weather.
Welcome aboard Ms. Ruby V: This is a nice place to hang out, hope you make yourself at home here.
