Howdy from the mountains of WNC

Hello,

We are a family of 4 (kids - 9&10) preparing for a year or two of cruising. We hope to depart in January 2010. We don't have a boat yet but we're looking. We plan on taking ASA courses, etc. prior to departure.

We look forward to gleaning all the information that we can from this site.

I’ve done a little down-hill canoeing - but SAILING the MOUNTAINS of North Carolina must be seriously challenging.
Welcome aboard ...

sailing in the mountains

Downhill canoeing if fun, so is kayaking in the snow. Sailing up here in the mountains is a bit tough but there is an active sailing club here. The ocean is only 4 1/2 hours away...we'd love to find someone between Charleston and Savannah to get some sailing hours in with...maybe we could trade rafting/canoeing/kayaking trips?

Anyway, thanks for the response...I look forward to interacting with this group.

Yea, I saw that on your profile about 2 seconds after I hit reply. We are near W. Jefferson and keep our boat on the Pamlico Sound....about 7 hours from A'ville. I'll be going to the boat in early-mid September for several days to do some preseason work and intend to take her out a few times. Does your work schedule allow you to get away during the week?

I can also give you first-hand experience with the most important part of owning a boat....maintenance (grin). How much sailing have you done?

Aloha TTB,
Welcome aboard!! Good to have you here. We passed through your area last August driving to New Bern and then back to Lexington, KY. Nice area. I was impressed with the boating possibilities out near the shore.
Kind Regards,
JohnL

Roger,

My work schedule does allow some flexibiliity during the week. I'd be eager to get any kind of experience, including maintenance. I grew up crewing in the Panama Canal Zone and have done a little sailing since then, including a 8-day trip to the Exumas with the family. I know enough to be dangerous. Email me at tntonboard@yahoo.com if you ever need help.

Congrats on the liveaboard situation. We live in North Asheville - Norwood Park - and our oldest son just started school in Charleston. We spend a good amount of time on Dewees and Capers Islands. It has been hot here over the past 2 weeks...hotter still, I imagine, in Charleston.

If you ever need me to bring something from the mtns down to the ocean, let me know. We'd be very interested in checking out your lagoon. We are still debating whether or not to cruise on a cat or monohull.
