Howdy

Hello everyone. I have been lurking around the forum for a bit, mostly just reading a lot. I figured may be I should say hi. SO... Hi! I really appreciate the discussions and help provided. I am new to sailing and hope to have a boat in the near future.

Hi Bill,

Glad to see you have joined the group. So tell us more. What part of the world are you in and to what kind of sailing do you aspire?

Re: Howdy

I am from the US. That doesn't seem to be too popular lately, but there are certainly worse places to live. I love my country, I just wish our leaders would start doing the right thing. I want to cruise the popular places, but have a bug to circumnavigate. I was looking around on the web for sailing websites and Cruising America's Great Loop - on a frugal budget. really stoked a fire under me. I hope to meet him someday. In a few years I will be in a position to buy a boat or build one. I am heavily considering a Bob Oram 44C.

Re: Howdy

If you are going to do a circumnavigation in the trade winds, you need to consider a yacht design that behaves well downwind. You will be sailing off the wind for weeks at a time. Whatever you get, set the yacht up so that it it makes downwind sailing easy and fun.

Re: Howdy

Thanks folks! I have read the "Exit Only" chronicles, what a trip through the Red Sea. Very daring it seems to most, with pirates and all!! I would love to go through that area, but will probably avoid it unless things settle down.

I don't know if I would sail through Pirate Alley again. With the problems going on in Yemen, things are even more unstable. We were only at risk for a few days when we sailed through. Hopefully things will improve over time as there is lots to see and do in the region.

Hi Bill

I am not able to reply to your PM. I think it because I have not posted enough for the required access to send a PM.

If you want to send me another PM with your email address, I will be able to reply to your questions there.
