Hopeful Liveaboarder in Virginia

I am excited to have joined the forum, after lurking around for the last year or so. I think I have finally made the decision to cut the umbilical, get rid of all my stuff (okay, this may take a little more work) and move onto a boat. I grew up sailing small boats, nothing like I would need for this venture, so I have sailing lessons stacked up for the next six months, and I am toying with doing six months fractional sailing with a local place that does it. That ought to give me time to find a boat, arrange dockage, get any critical work done, sell some stuff to pay for the work (just kidding--maybe) and all of the other necessary transitional stuff.

Of course, I could just pick a boat that a bunch of seemingly reliable people on the forum seem to like, and try that out, figuring if it is not perfect for me (as it probably wouldn't be) I could always change horses later.

Anyway, I am trying to get from theory to practice, and that seems to be the hard part. Giving up "lurking" seems to be a logical start. Now I can actually expose myself (my ignorance, that is) publicly and get some direct answers.

Welcome. Take a trip to East Beach area off shore drive near surf rider...Tons and tons of liveaboards. A full range from small sailboat to large trawler. Good luck!

Thanks for the greetings!! Cruiser2B thanks for the tip. I thought about doing something like that, wasn't sure where to go, but I was further concerned that people would find that strange or intrusive. I grew up in New England, and I have been told we are a little weird about proprieties....mostly by my girlfriend (s) from the Midwest while I lived there...Is there any sort of protocol to this beyond common courtesy?
