Hey all. I live in the SE part of Houston and just now seriously getting into sailing. You know, watching all of the YouTube videos I can find, going to the local sailing club and picking their brain, looking at sailboats as liveaboard, etc. I've got my eye on a '74 Gulfstar MKII 44', but it needs a crap-ton of work. I joined to get more info on living aboard, sailing tips, frugalness, etc.
Welcome from Hitchcock, Tx. Good luck with that big boat needing a crap-ton of work. Doesn't sound like a frugal decision to me. Do you already have a lot of sailing experience?
Check out Galveston Bay Cruising Association - Home Lots of good people and you can get some time out in the bay on various boats as crew. Icicle series is going on now, and shortly the regular sat Rum Races will start.
Soon enough the wed night race series will start on Clearlake. Smaller boats but a ton of fun and great experience.
I'm a complete and total newb, but I'm extremely willing to soak it all in and learn from mistakes. The engine appears to be out of sorts, but I'm going to take a closer look with someone that's much more experienced than myself. Thanks for the warm welcomes and I'm headed to volunteer next weekend thanks to xeon's post. Thanks xeon for the info!
Welcome from another houstonian. When you say it needs a crap ton of work and I'm a newbie on the same sentence......imagine how much work it'll need once you know how much more is wrong with it!
