Re: Hi from Gabriele, Tuscany, Italy

Hello Gabriele,

Headed to the Tuscan Archipelago on May 13th for 7 days. Bareboating a Catamaran out of Marina Cala de' Medici. Planning on hitting Elba, Capraia, and Giglio. Any thoughts, comments, or recommendations (or warnings) would be appreciated.

Re: Hi from Gabriele, Tuscany, Italy

Welcome to CruisersForum!

I would suggest updating your profile with your general location and your boat make & model or “Looking” in the "Boat" category. This info shows up under your UserName in every post in the web view. Many questions are boat and/or location dependent and having these tidbits under your UserName saves answering those questions repeatedly. If you need help setting up your profile then click on this link: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3308797

I would happily help more if the link above is not enough.

Re: Hi from Gabriele, Tuscany, Italy

Hi,
I hope to help you and sorry if my english is bad.
There are three ports on the island of Elba: Portoferraio, Porto Azzurro and Marciana Marina. Portoferraio is inside a large gulf where it is also possible to drop anchor. The water is not beautiful but the gulf is protected from the winds of the I and III quadrants. Pay attention to the winds of the II and IV quadrants. Remember that the entrance to the gulf is on the left. An excellent area for anchoring is southwest of the gulf (depth 3 - 5 m).
An excellent port is ESAOM (https://www.esaom.it/marina/) but it is 500 meters away. from the centre. For me the best!!
The Portoferraio marina (https://www.marinadiportoferraio.it/la-darsena/) is convenient but does not have nearby bathrooms.
Porto Azzurro has a sheltered gulf but be careful of the winds from the III quadrant. Remember that you cannot leave the catamaran unattended in the gulf. The port is very beautiful and comfortable.
Marciana Marina is very comfortable and excellent starting point for Capraia or Corsica.
The best bays are: Viticcio, Lacona, Straccoligno, Cannello, Marina di Campo, Fetovaia.
To see: Pomonte wreck (snorkelling) and the mines.
To eat:
Portoferraio 1) Molo G - Osteria Portuale 2) Pizzeria da Zucchetta;
Porto Azzurro 1) Osteria Locanda Cecconi 2) Pizzeria L'Arte Bianca 3) Mamadè Birra dell'Elba;
Lacona 1) Aguglia restaurant.

The island of Capraia is very small and its port is small. However, there are mooring buoys outside the port. The water is very nice and deep. To drop anchor you have to stay very close to the cliffs. Pay close attention to the weather. the winds from the southwest and southeast are very dangerous for the waves.

I don't know much about Giglio Island.

I hope I was helpful. Write again if you want more information.

Gabriele
