Hi from a Feeling 32 centreboarder

Hi All,

This is Cloudy Bay logging in for the first time. I am a Feeling 32 centreboarder. Anyone out there got one of these. I am trying to find out about my AVS, and wonder what has to be done to change from a Cat B to a cat A boat if at all possible.

Cheers, CB

Re: Hi

CB hi and welcome to CF. Why do you want to change the category from B to A?

Re: Hi

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Cloudy bay.

The AVS (Angle of Vanishing Stability) is computed from the boat's principle dimensions, hull shape, including factors such as: displacement/length ratio, beam/displacement ratio, sail area/displacement ratio, beam/length ratio, keel weight/location, etc.
None of these is easily owner modified.

Re: Hi

Hi Pete and Gord May,
It is not so much that I want to change the cat B to A, of the boat but if it is a matter of simple modifications, then I would like to undertake them so that I can enter some of the more noddy offshore races yet still retain my ditch crawling capabilities. Furthermore, I would like to know precisely the areas in which the boat is lacking for my own personal self confidence in bad weather.

I find that the AVS is a good figure to carry around with me in my head, as again it is something that I can use to relate boat capabilities to the prevailing conditions if they turn bad. If the weather is bad, a low AVS means get to harbour quick while a higher AVS might tempt one to stick it out. I cannot find the AVS for my Feeling 32 whose builder ceased trading last year. Does anyone have any ideas where |I can look?

Cheers, CB

Re: Hi

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here. I don't have any answers for you but Gord expressed that changing those qualities in a boat is rather laborious or costly.
kind regards,

Welcome! You will soon realize a 32' sailboat is the perfect size, no modification required. Everything else is too big or too small. Lol
