Hi dockheads, sailing newbie here

Hi, I am Steve from the UK. Been reading up on sailing for a while now and it’s something I really want to get into. I’m a complete beginner looking to make likeminded friends and get advice on being a sailor so I can meet my goal of sailing around the world someday.

Welcome Steve. Glad you've caught the bug. A tip for this site; if you go to the search menu and in the drop-down box fill in the google custom search, there's probably not a topic relating to boating that hasn't been discussed on this site.

Welcome aboard EvenKeel1, Steve,

Consider dropping by a local sailing club and offering to help out. You will eventually get asked to crew, and that's how it begins. Or, perhaps a friend of yours already sails, that was how I got started.

Ann

Re: Hi dockheads, sailing newbie here

Hello Steve and welcome to the forums. I just signed up here recently as well, and there are great people who are extremely knowledgeable and willing to help!

The sailing bug is very infectious and can spread very quickly - so beware!

I accidentally stumbled upon a YouTube video for some liveaboards on a Trawler (Tula's Endless Summer) roughly 6 months ago. I then found Delos and Vagabond's channel and kept watching videos and reading about sailing. A couple months after that I purchased a 'Sunset Sail' on Groupon and went with my wife on a 2 hour sailboat cruise for our first time on a sailboat.

Less than one month later I purchased our sailboat! It happens fast! I am still obsessed...

Re: Hi dockheads, sailing newbie here

Thanks for the advice guys. I’ve been reading through the different threads and this forum really does have info about everything. I’m a long way off buying a boat yet but will try out Ann’s idea. There’s a sailing club not too far away which I’m going to visit and try to join. Just out of curiosity what ages were you guys when you got into sailing?
