Oceannomad 90, great plan and adventure , good on you. I’m in Aus and have been sailing for 58 years, 40 of which cruising including global circ. My first coastal
cruise as
skipper was to the Whitsundays from Vic and I was quite apprehensive to be sure ! Think like this…you do a
passage from A to B let’s say a day, then another day, then a day and night or a few days. Mentally break up the long voyage back to NZ into smaller manageable distances. By the time you get to the Pacific with the longest, easiest ocean passages you’ll be much more experienced, comfortable with your boat and will enjoy the down hill ride home.Get
weather planning from Metbob in NZ if you think you need it he’s great. Expect things to break and need fixing, it’s a boat and will cost a bit. Be patient ! Old Dutch saying…” The
Captain who has time always has a good
wind “. Wait out cyclone seasons in safe places.Don’t allow yourself to be pressured by crews time constraints. Keep your
fuel clean and filter it before putting in
tanks in dodgy places, use a biocide religiously! Be wary of electronic
charts, use but have paper
charts and plot your position regularly especially on passages. Check for
reefs and small islands on your rhumbline. These can disappear on electronic charts when using small scale. Many
boats have come to grief falling into that trap. Take your time and enjoy the
experience,it may be the best thing you ever do. Good on you ! Your experience will build as will your confidence but we never stop
learning. It’s good and normal to be nervous, the sea is all powerful and must be respected . Good luck ! Amen !
