Hey, yo, Chicago sailor here.

Hey folks,
I've been lurking for about a year. I figured it was finally time to say hello. I am new to sailing. Up until recently my boating experience has been predominantly in a canoe that I bought for a hundred bucks on Craig's list. The paddle cost more than the boat. The boat had a few holes in it so I got to learn how to work with fibre glass. Fun.

I've been hesitant to make my first post because I, too, am a newbie with the dream of becoming a live aboard and sailing around the world. It seems like there have been a lot of that going around on this forum. So I've spent the year with my ears open and my mouth shut.

I just finished an introduction course on sunfish's to get some of the basics down. Then I found a place in my area, Crystal Lake, that rents American 14.6 boats for only $8 an hour. So I'm getting my practice in until the season is over.

My next step is to get a small boat, maybe a Coronado 25. From what I have seen for sale, I could buy one of those for the same price as taking lessons on a big boat.

That's it for now. Just trying to take the dream one step at a time.

Thanks for the forum. I've been learning a lot.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here. In addition to the price of the boat don't forget to cost in maintenance and slip fees if you keep it in the water. Insurance and other costs are there as well.
