Hello...in search of wind

Hello, lurker now member of forum, first off thank you to all who keep the info and stories flowing on this site. Serious hours of great stuff on here.
I live south of Atlanta GA, and looking to park a precision 23 sailboat at Lake Martin. Any advice or sailing reports much appreciated. Coming from the midwest and sailing Lake Perry. I have a feeling I will miss that wind.

Re: Hello...in search of wind

Hi, Greatest Show, welcome aboard CF.

Lake sailing is notorious for flukey winds. If you really want winds, the San Francisco Bay Area has very stable NW winds for the whole summer, but might be more than you bargained for!

Good luck with your search for a "Goldilocks" lake in your area.

Ann

Like Ann says, lake sailing the winds can be fluky, especially when surrounded by high hills and forest.

Lake Martin as in Alabama? How far south of Atlanta are you? That seems like quite a ride. Aren't there lakes closer, like West Point lake on the GA/AL border or going north Lake Lanier. Lots of sailing activity on Lanier and lots of places to park a boat.

Re: Hello...in search of wind

Inland winds can be flukey, but its a great way to learn about how wind and land interact and how to play the resulting wind to your advantage. Anyone can sail in nice stready strong winds, more knowledge and skill is needed to work light flukey inland winds successfully.

No current forecasting models will give this info. The models only forecast large scale systemic winds. Local knowledge is required to know how to translate that into local wind behavior.

David Burch's Marine Weather book has a good section on this subject.

Yes southwest of airport. West pointe is closest, facilities looked pretty rough. Lanier is tough with the possibility of rush hour ATL traffic. Yikes.

Thanks, yea. All I have sailed is lakes. Some more challenging than others. Reached out to local yacht club and have talked with a sailor who keeps a 27 footer on lake. Great info. Thanks for the replies.

Going all the way around Atlanta at rush hour, no way. Going there from the southside would be weekends or non peak hours only. And yes, Lake Lanier can be tough. I've been on the lake on a day without a breath of wind yet it was rougher than most of my Gulf Stream crossings, all from the wakes of hundreds and hundreds of power boats zooming around.

Don't know much about West Point facilities. Have only been on it a few times and that was in boats belonging to family members that had a house on the lake to keep the boat.

Re: Hello...in search of wind

I have been in Buckhead Atl for the last couple of months and can attest that the traffic has to be experienced to be believed. Full on stops on the Interstates is not an uncommon occurrence.
This experience has really reinforced to me that Urban life and the concept that everyone needs a 9 passenger SUV or full size pickup to ride Solo is broken, badly.
It’s insanity, I can’t understand why people want to live this way.
Now I know who fills those Cruise ships.
