Hello from the Mountains of Colorado
Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. My name is Hunter and I am currently land locked in Steamboat Springs, CO but am soon to be an empty nester(son is off to college this week)and looking to get back on the water. I was told of this site from a good friend and fellow sailor. He said it was a good site for all kinds of information regarding sailing and the cruising life style. I have been reading the forums for awhile now and have found them to be both informative and entertaining. I look forward to learning more from the site and getting to know the regulars.

I've always head of Steamboat Springs in 1960's cowboy films and have this romantic idea that it must be the most wonderful place to see.
Whats it like? Industry over a cess pit canal? or good?

Not in the least! It is breathtakingly pretty. I think the biggest industry is tourism.

Drew is right...it is beautiful....and tourism does drive the town. there is a big ski resort here. But you have to love the winter...it is long.

G'day, mate. Welcome aboard from down under. I used to love our ski trips to
Steamboat Springs. No skiing now, just sailing. Cheers.

Welcome aboard retnuh20561 and an especially late Aloha to Susan!
Although, Susan, to be fair, you didn't welcome me when I joined - about 4 years after you - LOL...

Welcome from a semi-neighbor in Nuevo Mexico, USA! I've sailed a couple of Colorado Lakes and sail in southern and northern NM. Where will you be sailing next week?

Thank you rgscpat. I'll be sailing from Ft. Lauderdale to the keys and back. I have done some small lake sailing here but just on Hobie Cats. Headed close to you tomorrow....going to the Great Sand Dunes National Park then over to Durango and back up to Steamboat. Might have some friends drive up from Albuquerque to meet us in Durango. Thanks again for the welcome.Hunter

Southwest Colorado
Durango's a great place to visit. We have a cabin 100 miles ESE of there near Chama, NM, and Heron Lake. We've done the Great Sand Dunes (and the alligators nearby) and Wolf Creek Pass. We frequently visit Pagosa Springs (Hog's Breath/now I think Boss Hogg restaurant, and Buffalo Inn in the Fairfield area west of town, with a nearby brewpub Carol Anne wants to try.)
The Methodist and Humane Society thrift shops in Pagosa are fun places to dig, and at the latter I once got a USCG-approved "float coat" for $50 and, one of our most spectacular deals ever, two new-in-their-packaging manual inflatable West Marine life preservers to $17 each in the "bargain basement".
Both Chama and Durango were on the old Denver & Rio Grande Railway and are end points for scenic steam rail rides between Durango and Silverton and Chama and Antonito. SW of Pagosa and SE of Durango are the San Juan sailing club (informal) nice folks in Arboles at the north end of Navajo Lake; SW of Chama, NM is Heron Lake (~7150' elevation), with a marina operated six months of the year by the New Mexico Sailing Club, New Mexico Sailing Club. Give a heads-up and drop by if you get a chance!
